Jazz Musical Adaptation of Moliere’s L’amour Medecin to be Staged on Gerasim Lebedev’s 200th Death Anniversary



2017 marks the seventy years of Indo-Russian official diplomatic relationship and friendship. To celebrate this auspicious occasion Russian Centre of Science and Culture in association with the Whole 9 Yards will commemorate the pioneer of Bengali theatre Gerasim Lebedev and his 200th Death Anniversary.

On the evening of 15th September, 2017 the Cultural Dept. of the Russian Federation Consulate General along with the Whole 9 Yard will be staging a jazz musical adaptation of Moliere’s L’amour Medecin, translated by Lebedev himself in the year 1795. The play is directed by Abhrajit Sen.

Lebedev came to Madras as a musician. He did concerts there and gained much fame. Later he came to Kolkata and became interested in the Indian languages. He learnt Hindi, Bengali and Sanskrit. He did the first translation of Vidyasundar from Bengali to Russian. He also translated Gita and a Sanskrit poem Mahamudgar.

The entry is free for all. Hence head to Gorky Sadan on 15th September at 6.30 pm to witness this special presentation.
