11th December, 2017 marked the 75th birth anniversary of Ananda Shankar. A great event was organized at Rabindra Sadan where distinguished artists such as Debojyoti Mishra and Bickram Ghosh, along with their respective troupes, paid their tribute to Ananda Shankar.
Following the music show, Amitabh Bachchan paid tribute to his friend and shared his goodwill for the Shankar family in a short but warm video message.
The first dance performance of the evening saw for the first time, Tanusree Shankar and Sreenanda Shankar performing together on stage. The mother-daughter duo initiated their dance with a piece called ‘Alankar’, followed by an enchanting performance where the entire troupe paid their respects to the master.
The last performance of the day was very special and emotional for the countless students who are trained by Tanusree Shankar and Ananda Shankar in the Uday Shankar gharana of dance.
This mesmerising performance was followed by a very important announcement. Tanusree Shankar announced that the troupe will perform in a world tour as a tribute to Uday Shankar and Ananda Shankar, in 2018-19. Named after both these iconic figures, the ‘Udayananda World Heritage Dance Tour’ is a series of concept driven dance performances, which will see the troupe performing in multiple cities in India and around the world, amidst diverse categories of dance lovers. The first show of this tour will be at Kalamandir, Kolkata on 23rd February 2018.
