Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2018 organized a discussion titled Crossing the Line- Women on the big screen who question, challenge, break the rules.

The discussion saw the presence of Award Winning Director Vishal Bhardwaj, actress Ratna Pathak Shah, Filmmaker and Actress Aparna Sen, Author and Actress Nandana Sen and Modhurima Sinha as the moderator.

Speaking at the event, Aparna Sen said “I was not aware of breaking rules when I made the films. But there were certain issues that I had to overcome. One can say that in a way I broke the rules. I had kissing scenes in my films when depicting such scenes was unheard of. Even love between an older woman with a younger man led to much criticisms. However I am glad that I could overcome them”.

Ratna Pathak Shah highlighted on the way women has been portrayed in films and television for many years. “Now I find that there is a slight change in the kind of roles offered to the actresses. Otherwise earlier, they were such props in the film. Look glamorous and your job is done. Television is also much to blame. When I did television, I had done such different roles. But now everything is limited to saas-bahu sagas. These have to be changed” said the veteran actress.

Mira Nair said “It is unfortunate that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has to face such opposition from the state. One of my films had to face such opposition for a limited time. But now the situation is unfortunate. Freedom of expression is curbed with such steps”.

The speakers kept the audience hooked to their seats with their interesting viewpoints and witty anecdotes.
