Interview: Single Mother Chumki Sharma on Winning Ms India Queen of Substance Title (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Chumki Sharma recently participated in the “Mrs India Queen of Substance” pageant held at the ITC WelcomHotel, Dwarka in New Delhi. The Grand Finale was held on 13th April 2018. The pageant is arguably the most prestigious pageant in the country for all women who are either married currently or have been married at least once (married, widowed and divorced women are eligible to participate). The pageant directors currently are Mrs Ritika Vinay – Mrs Asia Pacific 2014 and Mr Vinay Yadawa. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with Chumki in an exclusive chat. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Congratulations on winning the title
!! How did you think of participating in this event?

Chumki Sharma- Thanks a lot!! I won the title Ms India Queen of Substance and the sub-title Beauty with Brains. Since I could not participate in Miss India, I thought of participating in Mrs India. But since I am a divorcee, I could not take part in it. This time, the organizers introduced this new category for divorced women-Ms India 2018. So I am the first Ms India in the new category.
I was crowned the national winner of the title by celebrity judges Mahima Chaudhary and Poonam Dhillon, two directors Ritika and Vinay and several dignitaries and eminent personalities.

Can you tell us more about the pageant?

Chumki Sharma– The pageant classifies women in 2 categories – Regular (for women less than 40) and Classic (for women 40 and above). The format of the the pageant and rounds are all same and held simultaneously for both categories but the awards are given to 2nd Runner Up, 1st Runner Up and Winner in 2 categories separately.

The judges loved me and adjudged me the winner but since am technically not a “Mrs” (being divorced), the pageant introduced an “Ms” category for single women and mothers like me (who have been married at least once) and crowned me the national winner in this category. Apart from me, there are 2 other winners from the Regular and Classic categories.

So what is next in line for you?

Chumki Sharma– I am also being nominated to represent India in the prestigious international “Ms United Nations” pageant to be held in Jamaica in July 2018. It is a huge honour to be able to represent the country on an international platform and I am really excited about it. Not many people get to represent their country. I am glad to have got such a huge chance.

How has life been after you won the title?

Chumki Sharma- It’s wonderful that you are taking a few steps to get my story out a bit. It will definitely help us to spread the awareness that a Bengali woman has won a prestigious national title. Also, I think, it would make Bengal and India proud and I hope it inspires many other women to not stop dreaming at whatever life stage they might be in, to keep believing that there could be beautiful dreams to chase and achieve even after marriage and children. If my participation and win can inspire a few more women to embrace platforms such as this to showcase their many talents and multifaceted personalities, my hard work in winning the title would be worth it.

So you believe in pursuing your dreams?

Chumki Sharma- We have one life and one must never stop dreaming. I write poetry too. My poetry book in English titled Shape of Emptiness was published by a reputed Australian publishing company.

How supportive has your family been in the entire journey?

Chumki Sharma-They always have been supportive. My parents are my pillars and my brother and sister are my biggest critics. They have always helped me to prepare for the contest and criticized me when I went wrong. I have brought up my son singlehandedly. Without their support, I would not have been able to achieve this.

What is your expectation from the international pageant?

Chumki Sharma- I want to give it my best shot and make my country proud. I will be getting the chance to meet many women from different countries and that will be a great experience. Whether I win or not, I leave it in the hands of the Almighty.

We hope that Chumki makes India proud and win the international pageant!!
