There was a time when every Bengali Hindu Home had a panjika (or panji), or almanac, which assumed great importance in determining their lifestyles and daily lives, with foretellers, astrologers, palmists and soothsayers helping build up its need for reference to just about everything.
Adi Panjika Darpan is a collection of illustrations and advertisements published in panjikas between 1842 and 1926, with references to advertisements from the late 19th century to the pre-independence, based on research findings.
