Saheb Bhattacharya is a versatile Bengali actor who has not only confined himself to acting in films, plays but is also a successful anchor. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actor prior to the release of his latest Bengali film Oskar. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Why did you say yes to Oskar?
Saheb Bhattacharya- When the director of the film Partha approached me with the film, I found the story very appealing and innovative. Moreover I found the character that I had to portray extremely challenging. I am a South Kolkata boy who had to portray a village boy of 1983. This was a big challenge and further accentuated the charm of this character.
Since this is a period film, what kind of challenges did you have to face while doing the shoot?
Saheb Bhattacharya- One of the biggest hardship was doing the research for the film. This is a period film and we had to show the 1980’s. So a lot of research had to be done. Even I had to do research for portraying my character in the film.
One interesting story can be shared with regard to this context. I was shown the costume that I had to wear and I scrapped it. The discussion was going on at my home. We were in the drawing room and there were pictures of my father from the 80’s with other eminent celebrities. We got the idea from the pictures and my costumes were designed by drawing inspiration from those costumes.
How was the shooting experience?
Saheb Bhattacharya- We shot the film at really great locations. We shot at a Rajbari in Medinipur. It was a virgin location. We had a great time there. An interesting incident happened there. Apa di (Aparajita Adhya), Kharaj da (Kharaj Mukherjee) were shooting at the location. A huge number of people had gathered to see the shooting. Such was the crowd that we had to take turns and go and wave at the crowd. This pleased them. This was a great experience. Appreciation of the audience is the biggest gift for any actor. And this kind of appreciation is a great thing.
Many actors are doing web-series. You have done one recently. What took you so long to say yes to a web-series?
Saheb Bhattacharya- To tell you the truth, I did not do any web-series till now because I did not like the content. However the web-series I did for Hoichoi directed by Sayantan Ghosal appealed to me. Hence I said yes to it. The series is about the Dark-web. Not many people know about it. I had a great time working with Sayantan. I will not reveal much about the character at this moment though. Sayantan is good at handling the thriller element and he has handled this one also very well.
What are the next projects lined up?
Saheb Bhattacharya- I have two other projects lined up for release this year. One is Suman Maitra’s Dear God and the other is Kamaleswar Mukherjee’s Mukhomukhi.
You have acted as Topse in many Feluda films. If you are given a chance to portray a detective on screen, who would to want to portray (except Feluda or Byomkesh)?
Saheb Bhattacharya- (laughs) If you cancel out Feluda and Byomkesh, not much is left. However if I get a character like Sherlock, then I can say yes to the project.
Finally, the most obvious question- What are your expectations from Oskar?
Saheb Bhattacharya- Bengali audiences have evolved and they are now more interested to watch films which have good content. Films with good content have become hits in recent times. Oskar has a good story and I will request them to come to the hall and watch the film. They will surely like it.
Wishing all the best to Saheb for Oskar and his future endeavours!!
