Video: Interview of RJ Devaki
93.5 RED FM took a step in uniting the country with the Independence Day campaign ‘National Jock Exchange’. On Independence Day, RED FM’s most renowned RJs, from 14 different cities crossed the border of their state to explore a new city. RJ Devaki from Ahmedabad came to Kolkata under this campaign and Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the RJ at RED FM office in Kolkata. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- How has Kolkata been treating you?
RJ Devaki- Oh!! I am loving all the attention and adulation that I have been receiving from the audiences. Many have told me “Ami tomake bhalobashi” and many have even showered praises on me. This is huge for me to come to this part of the country and get such a responsive audience. I have to thank Praveen for having such a great audience.
You have interacted with the audiences. How was that experience?
RJ Devaki- It was amazing. I used to speak in either Hindi or English and they used to speak in Bengali. It was amazing how even differences of language could not pose a barrier in communication. It was like that film Kites where two people from different countries conversed with one another. Many asked me out while some wanted me to meet their mothers. Yes, it went that far. It was indeed very welcoming.
So did you try out any food during your stay in Kolkata?
RJ Devaki- Yes, I actually was on a food trail during my stay this time. I have been to a famous sweet shop and I gorged on Sandesh, Rosogolla, Mishti Doi and others. Since I am a vegetarian, I am missing out on a lot of your cuisine. I am making up for that by consuming the sweets. I went to Flurys and also had a great time there.
I went to Kumortuli and got to touch the soil of river Ganga. I also learnt how Durga idols are made. I even tried out my hand at making an idol. An idol maker even gifted me a face of Ma Durga. Further I learned that the decoration of the idols come from Surat. So there is the Gujarat connection.
I do a show Devaki ka Carnama where I have interviewed eminent Bollywood celebrities like Govinda, Katrina Kaif, Anurag Kashyap and so on in a car. I will be doing something called Nau ka Nama where I will be interviewing Baul singer Tirtho who will be singing live for me.
Any other place you are planning to go during your stay in Kolkata?
RJ Devaki– I will be going to Someplace Else and I will also be going shopping for silver ornaments. I am a huge fan of silver ornaments. I want to visit Kalighat.
Have you picked up any Bengali words?
RJ Devaki- Apart from Ami tomake Bhalobashi, I know words like Bhishon, Luchi, Radhaballavi, Cholar Dal and so on.
How is the audience different from Gujarat in Kolkata?
RJ Devaki– Well it took me a lot of effort to get the people of Kolkata to like me. However When I got adjusted here, I felt very comfortable. Kolkata is a romantic place and I am enjoying the vibe here. I called up a friend today and that friend pointed out that I sound as calm as I sounded in Ahmedabad. I am glad this swapping thing happened. I got to stay in Kolkata for three days and get to know the city better. Otherwise earlier, I used to come for work and hardly got the time to know the city.
Now I can say proudly that I am from both Ahmedabad and Kolkata!!
