New Bollywood Film Dil Dhadakne Do Kolkata Promotions
What is the secret of making a successful film? A multi-star cast or a good story or great songs or picturesque locations? Well the answer to this question will be different for different individuals. Let’s see how the third directorial venture of Zoya Akhtar Dil Dhadakne Do having almost all the above essentials fared.
The story is essentially about the Mehras (based in Delhi), a rich high class business family consisting of Kamal Mehra, his wife, their son and daughter. The son Kabir, aged twenty five wants to pursue a career in aviation as opposed to his family’s wish of taking over the business (despite having no interest in it). The daughter Ayesha is married and runs her own business successfully and even featured in a reputed magazine’s list of successful entrepreneurs. Even then she is not asked to take over the family business, because she is a girl and married. Kamal and his wife have no love in their marriage and they just tolerate each other. The members of the Mehra family have a transforming experience when they set out on a cruise trip to celebrate the anniversary of Kamal and his wife.
Zoya Akhtar is one of those few directors who have set very high standards with their works. Her last film, the super successful Zindegi Milegi Na Dobara has been watched and re-watched several times. But can we do the same for Dil Dhadakne Do? Well, not really!! Like Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara, this film is also about a trip which changes lives and people’s perspectives. But the earlier film had its heart at the right place. This film has too many characters for comfort. I understand it is an anniversary party trip with many friends and relatives, but still there are many unwanted characters who the director could have avoided. It looks like a page from one of the novels of Jane Austen!! The last scene where the whole family becomes adamant to save Kabir looks like a scene from the Sajid Khan movies. That is not what we expect from Zoya!!
The length of the film is another pain in all the wrong places. At 170 minutes, the film is way too long. Had the film been half as entertaining as Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara, it would be easy to sit through the film. The editor did not do the job assigned to him properly. He should have chopped away scenes liberally and made the film half an hour short, at the least!!
Many may oppose my comparing DDD with Zindegi but the comparison becomes obvious because Zoya herself had set a high bench mark with the previous Hindi film ZNMD!! Hence comparisons are bound to happen. The film showcases the journey wonderfully and places like Spain and other international locales are also beautifully highlighted. However, the much hyped cruise had some shots of the cruise ship and fleeting glimpses of places like Istanbul or a Hamam Bar. The director could have shown the cast exploring different places and that would have taken the film to another level. Most of the scenes happen within the ship. The cruise does not get highlighted much. Then why all the promotional hype about the ship?? And about Pluto Mehra, the dog of the Mehras!! He is just another pet who is the narrator of the film. But he has pretty less to do, apart from imparting knowledge on relationships and human values. How I wish the director would have done something interesting with Pluto.
Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a big letdown. The songs are too loud and I doubt whether it will remain with you after you leave the hall.
Acting by the huge cast consists of some good performances and some mediocre performances. Anushka’s Farah needed fine tuning. The song Girls like to Swing looked like as if Anushka stepped in the set after completing Bombay Velvet. Priyanka Chopra is OK as Ayesha but one expects more from such a powerful actress. The director just makes her cry. I mean a lady who can run a business which gets featured in Forbes will at least be able to speak her mind once in a while. But she cannot do that when confronted by her family and her in-laws about her divorce. That is very strange!! Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah as Mr and Mrs Mehra are good as the money minded individuals who show off and also can marry their son to a rich tycoon’s daughter to save the business. Ranveer Singh shines brightly amongst the lot. The actor brings in the much needed humor in the film and is a bundle of energy. His confrontation scene with his parents deserves praise.
Dil Dhadakne Do is like a cup of cappuccino!! The director just places the characters at the froth level and never delves deep inside. Hence the film lacks the vibrancy and lively spirit of Zindegi!! While watching the film, the only thing that kept crossing my mind was Anupam Roy’s song Gobheer e Jaao!! Had high hopes from this New Bollywood Hindi Film but Alas!!
