Grappling arts are among one of the most ancient martial arts in the world and all cultures have their own grappling formats. For the first time in Kolkata a grappling seminar was organised with multiple time world champion in judo, sambo and Brazilian jujitsu Mr Bruno Ivan Tomasseti at the Calcutta Judo Club. The initiative was by the Kratoz Combat Academy.
The first written record about Judo in India is about demonstrations and coaching of Judo by Shinzo Tagaki arranged at Shantiniketan in 1929 by Rabindranath Tagore. In fact he was the pioneer who promoted this gentle art for self defense and character development especially for the women of his times.
Mr Tomasseti’s workshop was an eye opener for the close knit jujitsu and judo community in Kolkata. With a participation of more than 35 active martial artists the workshop consisted of two days of extensive training on takedowns, submissions, set ups and strategies for sports and self defence. This initiative by Kratoz Combat Academy is the first in a series of workshops that will be done to better the scope of martial arts in Bengal.
