Interview: Director Manoj Michigan on his Upcoming Kolkata Bengali Film ‘Ami Joy Chatterjee’; (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Manoj-Michigan-Interview
After his last film “89”, ace director Manoj Michigan is gearing up for the shooting of his upcoming Bengali film “Ami Joy Chatterjee”. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the director who shared some interesting details about the film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Can you share some details about the story of “Ami Joy Chatterjee”?

Manoj Michigan- The film is about Joy Chatterjee who is a very successful businessman. He may be successful but he has a number of flaws which includes his self centered nature, egoistic attitude, non-compassionate nature and his belief that the whole world revolves around him. His fiancée Dr. Aditi Roy is a character who is in complete contrast to him. By profession she is a pediatrician. She is compassionate and kind; emotions which Joy lacks. This makes her go completely at loggerheads with Joy. In a twist of events, Joy goes missing. What happens after that is what the whole film all about.

So this is again a thriller after 89. Right?

Manoj Michigan- This is actually a thriller cum drama. You will find both thriller and dramatic elements in this film. This will surely appeal to the audiences who like thrillers as well as the drama loving audience.

Can you throw some light on the cast of this film?

Manoj Michigan- Abir Chatterjee will be playing Joy and Jaya Ahsan will be playing Aditi. Shataf will be seen playing the role of ACP.

Why did you select Abir to play Joy and Jaya to play Aditi?

Manoj Michigan- Abir Chatterjee was the first person whom I had in mind when I was thinking of whom to cast as Joy. He fits the bill perfectly. We had plans of starting the shoot in December but since Abir was busy, we waited. Jaya meanwhile is a wonderful actor. I have seen her acting in many films and she has great screen presence.

Who is composing the music of the film?

Manoj Michigan- Raja Narayn Deb is composing the music of the film. He will be doing the background score and two songs in the film. Samik and Kunal will also be composing one song which will go with the end title.

When do you plan to start the shooting of this film?

Manoj Michigan- We plan to start shooting in the month of May. We will be shooting in real locations all over Kolkata. We have an outdoor shooting in Kalimpong too.

The editor of the film is Sankalp Bhowmick and the DOP is Manash Ganguly. Shivanggi Choudhury is the producer and the film has been produced under Aadiiv Kreation Pvt Ltd.

With Manoj Michigan heading the film and such an enviable cast, Ami Joy Chatterjee looks like a project we must all look forward to!!

New Bengali Film 89 Review, Premiere Pics; An Edgy Thriller that Entertains and Excites, Must Watch!

“Those eyes !! Those very eyes are everywhere. They seem to haunt me…” said Purba to anti-terrorist squad inspector Anup. A scene from the recently released psycho-thriller film 89 is what I am describing here. Manoj Michigan’s new psycho-thriller which released on Friday is inspired by Hollywood films like Silence of the Lambs.

The film begins with Purba, a psychologist being the sole witness of a bomb blast and her helping the anti terrorist squad to catch the criminals responsible for the blast. She meets Anup, an inspector working with the squad and a friendship blossoms. However certain incidents become the reason for the cause of turmoil in Purba’s life. What are the reasons for the mental turmoil? Can she figure it out? The film answers them beautifully.

After the hugely successful comedy film Damadol, Manoj Michigan’s 89 is surely a worthy successor to his earlier directed film. The director keeps the narrative simple. The going back and forth between times is dealt aptly so as not to confuse the audiences. The linking of Purba’s mental troubles aptly with the serial killer deserves praise. Not a single moment in the film will make you feel bored. Things keep on happening one after the other. The director must also be congratulated for dealing with the direction as well as the production department with much élan.

DOP Supriyo Dutta who has again worked with the director after Damadol has done wonders with the camera. The light and shade play in the cell where the serial killer Sabyasachi is kept seriously gives goosebumps. A Hollywood-ish effect surely pervades in the treatment of the film. The use of black and white in some of the scenes also adds another level to the film.

Music by Raja Narayan Deb is a perfect fitting to the psycho-thriller. Without good background score, the story would not have been so effective for the audiences watching the film.

Acting is one of the high points of this film. Shataf as Anup and Raima Sen as Dr. Purba do a good job in the film. Shataf has a good screen presence and should be utilized more by the directors of the industry. Raima after her stint as the cardiologist in the film Hrid Majharey does justice to the role of the psychologist. Barun Chanda as Dr. Mullick also is apt for the role. However the actor who steals the show despite having lesser scenes than the others is Saswata Chatterjee. If the actor scared you as the killer Bob Biswas in Bollywood film Kahaani, he will give you nightmares with his role as Sabyasachi. It takes immense courage to give life to such a character. Hats off to Apu da for the flawless acting and surely those eyes will haunt many seated in the audience after they leave the hall.

Manoj Michigan’s psycho-thriller 89 is a film worth taking a trip to the hall. And more so for people interested in numerology!!
