Swadhinatar Manchagaan- Theatre Songs of Independence Organized at Academy of Fine Arts

Swadhinatar Manchagaan- Theatre Songs of Independence was presented in Academy Theatre’s annual show this year at Academy of Fine Arts. The new production was about the Bengali theatre. The main emphasis was on its songs, and how it became an important force to hold aloft the spirit of patriotism.

With the passage of time these songs won the place in the nation’s clarion call for freedom during the British rule in India. With the Independence of India, Bengal has accumulated a vast repertoire of mancha-gaan (theatre-song) of patriotic and nationalistic fervor, which has been passed on from generation to generation through several decades. The festival was a humble attempt to explore the mancha-gaan which swam against the tide during the struggle for Independence to inspire the masses to march onward for their motherland along with the tribute towards the national heroes of India.

Performers like Devajit Bandyopadhyay, Riddhi Bandyopadhyay, Debasish Basu, Diptendu Basu presented the songs by Dinabandhu Mitra, Girishchandra Ghosh, Jyotirindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Dwijendralal Roy, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bijan Bhattacharya and many others.  It was conceptualized and directed by Devajit Bandyopadhyay. Songs like Nil Banore Sonar Bangla ( Devajit from Nildarpan), Timir Bidari Alokh Bihari ( Riddhi from Karagar), Andhar Dambaru Taale ( Devajit from Pralay), O Amar Desher Maati ( Diptendu, asong Tagore wrote during Bangabhanga Andolon ), Aschhe Oi Nabab Bahadur ( Devajit from Sirajuddaula ), Vande Mataram ( Devajit and Riddhi from Santan ) are worth a mention.

The celebration was followed by film shows Bhagini Nivedita, Dadathakur both at Nandan 3.

Painting exhibition ‘The Indian Circus’ by artist Biswajit Das Attracts Kolkata Art Enthusiasts

A solo painting exhibition titled The Indian Circus by artist Biswajit Das celebrating the diversity in Indian subcontinent was inaugurated by eminent painter Siddharth Sengupta at the Academy of Fine Arts.

“I have always tried to explore the corners of India with the unique style of observation coupled with pragmatic thinking. My paintings are not merely paintings, but they also raise many questions. Religions have and always will been an important part of our society. We cannot ignore it. But it has been found that religion has been often misused and this causes huge tension among the people in such a diverse country” said Biswajit Das. The paintings in the collection are all colored mainly in bright colors like blue, yellow and pink. The artist highlighted on the fact that he has a fetish for bright colors. This is the reason why he has selected such colors for the paintings.

The artist who has done exhibitions in Delhi and other places was however excited to organize his solo exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts. “I feel honored and excited to organize my painting exhibition at Academy. This is a dream come true for me. With so many people coming to see the paintings, I hope my work will also get noticed and appreciated”. Biswajit Das also stressed that his paintings were nothing simple and that one will have to notice it intently to grasp the meaning properly.

The paintings at the exhibition are not only for display but they can also be bought. The price range of the paintings are between Rs. 25000 to Rs 1,50,000.

The exhibition will continue till the 8th of September.
