When crime against women have increased by leaps and bounds in not only the city but also the country, actress Mumtaz Sorcar and her friend Mayuri Bhattacharya (Entrepreneur and brand management personnel) have taken the initiative to jointly launch a comprehensive program to empower women and teach them the techniques of self defense. The initiative known as Fight Back started in January 2014 and aims to empower women with the necessary tools and defense mechanisms in order to make them capable of standing strong at the face of oppression and not become a victim every time.
A calendar shoot was organized recently at Plush, Astor Hotel where women from various professions came forward to pledge their support for the cause. Some of the noted celebrities who came for the Fight Back calendar shoot include designers Sarbari Dutta, Agnimitra Paul, Jaya Mishra, actresses Mouboni Sorcar, Mumtaz Sorcar, Jaya Seal Ghosh, singers Paroma Banerji, Tania Sen, Jojo, Rj Jinia, fitness expert Mrinalini Sengupta, dancer Tanushree Shankar and others.
“The primary thought behind this campaign is to make the women self reliant. They must be made physically and mentally strong so that they will be able to deal with the people harassing them. It is not always physical harassment but they are often harassed mentally which also causes a major problem in their lives. This initiative which we have started is to make them realize that they are important and have a major role to play in the lives of men. Rather than balancing everything, they must voice their protests against crimes committed against them. With Fight Back, we will be dealing with long term plans and not short term issues. There will be trainers who will be conducting workshops and teaching the women skills to protect themselves in every way” said actress Mumtaz Sorcar at the photo shoot.
Agnimitra Paul found this to be a great initiative that actress Mumtaz and her friend Mayuri has started. “They are both busy with their work. Despite that they have come up with this initiative. I am glad that I could come and help them in their work. It is necessary to come up with such initiatives. This will empower women and they will be able to fight back easily” said the designer.
A workshop will be conducted on the 1st and 2nd of February with actress Mumtaz Sorcar for enhancing the knowledge of women on self defense techniques.
