For Aditya Vikram Sengupta, his favorite action hero was Mithun Chakraborty. “Not even Superman can match up to him. I saw a film called Param Dharam. He (Mithun Chakraborty) takes a huge wheel and throws it at the villain. I used to keep the VHS at my home on rent for many months so that I could watch the scene over and over again” said the director.

For Imtiaz Ali, Mithun Chakraborty’s Gunda changed him permanently. “I am still reeling under the influence of the film” said Imtiaz Ali.

The Angry Young Man image of Amitabh Bachchan can be cited as the most influential action hero. “I have seen his films on television but I have heard stories of his popularity. Jamshedpur Talkies hall owner contemplated whether he should show the trailer of Giraftaar in the interval or not. He assumed that people may get excited and violence may happen in the hall premises. Later it was known that the trailer caused so much excitement, just a glimpse of Mr Bachchan that about twenty five chairs were broken down” added Imtiaz Ali.

Both the directors agreed that the action hero was fading out in the Indian films and cited reasons for the trend too. “We try to make films with which we could relate to. Rage is something which you can feel at a particular moment but sustaining that for a long time period is very difficult. The time period often for making a film is about a year. I doubt whether one can have enough reasons for the sustaining rage to be made into a film” said Imtiaz Ali.

One can therefore conclude that with changing times the importance and popularity of the action hero in Hindi films is decreasing with the passing of time.
