Bengali Film Parapaar (2014) Review; Well Told and a Fitting Tribute to the Late Riturapno Ghosh

Moti Nandy is mainly remembered for his works as a sports journalist and also for writing many novels on sports. However director Sanjoy Nag took up the great responsibility of making a film based on the writer’s non-sports novel. The film Parapaar is one of those novels that does not have a sports person as the main protagonist, as one may find in many of Moti Nandy’s novels like Striker, Stopper and so on.

The film Parapaar tells the story of an emotional journey of a man named Rudranath Chattopadhyay who returns back to his family after serving a jail sentence for fourteen long years. The film is set against the backdrop of the Nirbhaya incident which shook the entire nation. However he is surprised and to an extent shocked when he sees that his family consisting of his wife Damini and children are happy without him and his in-existence did not have much of an effect on them. This has a heavy emotional impact on his mind. He is sent to his ancestral home where his life had changed and he seeks to find the answers to questions. Whether he is able to find the answers to the questions raging in his mind and discover the eternal truths of life is what the film presents.

Sanjoy Nag must be credited for chalking out perfectly engaging characters. Be it Urmila or Damini or Gopal or Rudranath, the director leaves no stone unturned in giving us great characters in this film. However, while he scored superbly with the characterization, he could not exhibit the same level of competence with the narrative. The shifts to and fro in time often are confusing and there are high chances of the audience getting confused. This little jerk in the movie watching experience is however made up by the wonderful art direction and mellow background score.

The Lullaby in Khamaj ‘Jeno Kasher Pashapasi Duto Train’ sung by the legendary Asha Bhosle and composed by music director duo Sourendro-Soumyojit not only blends beautifully with the feel of the film but also stands out as a number that music lovers would enjoy listening to again and again.

After a string of over the top performances in many of her latest releases like Taan and Pati Parameshwar, actress Rituparna Sengupta wins the heart with her role as Damini. She proves her mettle and establishes it yet again that she is an actress of great potential and if given the right kind of roles and directed well, she can do magic on screen. Bratya Basu shines equally as Gopal. Bangladeshi Theater actor Ahmed Rubel is woody and does not do enough justice to his role. Paoli as the servant’s daughter is also too refined and this also may strike one as odd but then again, Paoli is too refined an actress to let such issues cloud the mind of the audience.

Produced by Purti Entertainment Pvt Ltd, Parapaar is a film which has its heart in the right place. It is a good film to watch that not only compels one to retrospect and look into the different perspectives of life but is entertaining too.
