Interview: Actress Paoli Dam on Upcoming Bengali Film ‘Ajana Batash’; “The film’s success would be a Fitting Tribute to the Late Director”, says Paoli


A press conference was organized for director late Anjan Das’ last directed film Ajana Batas at Hotel Hindusthan International recently. Paoli Dam, Vikram Chatterjee and Chandradeep Das (son of late Anjan Das) were present to address the media and interact with them. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged actress Paoli Dam in a candid chat about her experience of working in this film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Tell us something about the character that you play in the film Ajan Batas….

Paoli Dam– I play the role of Deepa who works in an advertising firm. She is just like the other girls that you will be seeing everyday around in your locality. She suffers from loneliness. This is very topical an issue among individuals residing in the cities. They work like a machine and when they go back home, they often suffer from loneliness. They often do not have someone to talk and share their inner feelings with. The same is the case with Deepa. The subject is difficult but Anjan da has portrayed it beautifully in the film. A director of his caliber could only do justice to such topics.

Ajana Batas for you is…??

For me Ajana Batas is a very poetic and lyrical film. This is the kind of film which was liked by Anjan da. Joy Goswami’s writings were appreciated by Anjan da so much that he had made two films (Saaj Batir Rupkotha and Jara Bristite Bhijechilo) before. This film is also made on a writing of Joy Goswami. It is a very beautiful film.


You have worked with Anjan Das before too. What was the experience like?

Yes, I have worked with Anjan da before in Banshiwala in 2010. He was a great person to actually work with. I simply cannot believe even now that he is no more with us. The director is the captain of the ship and when we are on the verge of this film’s release, he is not with us. This is a huge loss. When we were shooting the film way back in 2013, Anjan da was very sick. He used to worry whether the film will ever be released. The best thing is the film is releasing and this is the best tribute that we can pay towards him. I am grateful to Vignesh Films who have come forward to help in the release of this film.

Could you relate with the character of Deepa when you were shooting for the film?

Yes, I could actually relate with the character of Deepa at certain levels. Like all individuals, even actors have their share of ups and downs in their lives. Deepa did not have friends to share her trouble or anxieties with. But I have it in the form of you all (smiles broadly). However I would also like to point out that there are times when having a friend is also not enough. You often cannot share your inner turmoil with the person.


Though a clichéd question; what are your expectations from this film?

Paoli Dam- I have high expectations from the film. Since this is Anjan Das’s last film, I will urge the audiences to go to the hall and see the film. Let them decide for themselves. This is the best way to pay tribute to the late director.

With music by Partho Sengupta, the film also stars Koushik Sen and Shankar Chakraborty in important roles. Ajana Batas is slated for release on the 27th of March.

Vignesh Films Ready to Treat the Audience with Upcoming Bengali Films Kadambari and Ajana Batash; Stars Meet the Press


A grand press meet was organized recently by Vignesh Films. The press conference saw the celebration of the success of the Bengali film Koli, along with the press meet of the upcoming Bengali films Kadambari and Ajana Batash. The press conference was graced with the presence of Konkona Sen Sharma, Surojeet, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Kaushik Sen and many others associated with these three films.


The film Kadambari is based on the life of Rabindranath Tagore’s sister-in-law Kadambari Devi who is known to be the bard’s muse. Director Suman Ghosh’s film will explore the relationship between Tagore and Kadambari Devi. Konkona plays the role of Kadambari in the upcoming Bengali film while the role of Rabindranath Tagore will be enacted by Parambrata Chattopadhyay. Speaking at the occasion, Konkona said “I feel that Parambrata suited very much in the role of the Bard”.


The other Upcoming Bengali film Ajana Batash, directed by the late Anjan Das is one which showcases loneliness, depression and the related problems. The film is about Deepa and her feelings and sufferings and how she overcomes them. Paoli Dam and Kaushik Sen will be seen in important roles in the film.

With two Kolkata Bengali Film nearly ready for release and one film tasting success, Vignesh Films is on a roll. We wish them all the best for their future film endeavors!!

Snippets from 4th Edition of Royal Stag Mirchi Music Awards Bangla 2014; Team Srijit Mukherji Tops the List of Awardees

After its overwhelming success for the last three years, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM is back with the 4th edition of Mirchi Music Awards Bangla, Royal Stag Mirchi Music Awards Bangla 2014 Powered by Idea (MMA Bangla). The prestigious award show in Bengal recognizes and celebrates the best in the Bengali music industry. With the greatest in the Bengali music industry acting as judges and sensational live acts the fourth edition of the annual music awards rocked.

More than 1500 songs which were released in the year 2014 were judged by a panel consisting of thirty two personalities from the music industry. This was done so that the most deserving and outstanding artists were presented with the awards in the various categories. The entire process of judging was held in secret ballot. This was handled by the renowned audit firm Ernst & Young. The songs were adjudged for total 23 award categories. Besides the regular awards categories in Film and Non-Film Bangla music, there was also the Mirchi Listeners’ Choice Awards for the Best Film Song and the Best Film Album.

A bevy of stars from the film and music industry walked the red carpet at the Mirchi Music Awards including the likes of Prosenjit Chatterji, Jeet Ganguly, Chiranjit, Babul Supriyo, Payel Sarkar, Gargi Roy Choudhury, Tanusree, Usha Utthup, Kabir Suman, Pandit Tanmoy Bose, Indraadip Das Gupta, Raghab Chatterjee Director Srijit Mukherjee, actors Indrashish Roy, Tota Roy Chaudhury, Locket Chatterji, singer Rupankar, Sidhu & his band Cactus, Haimanti Sukla, Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta, Surajit, directors Sudeshna Roy, Nandita Ray and Shiboprasad Mukhopadhyay, Rupam Islam, composer Joy Sarkar, and others.

The show was hosted by Abir Chatterji, Kanchan Mullick and Mir. The show was studded with outstanding performances by eminent singers Akriti Kakkar, Anupam Roy, Lagnajita, Prashmita Paul, Sayantika, actress Paoli Dam, Nachiketa Chakraborty and actor Soham.

Radio Mirchi honored veteran musician Jatileshwar Mukherjee with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to Bengali music.

Noted violinist Dilip Roy won “Special Jury’s choice for outstanding contribution to Bangla music”.

Runa Laila, the international face of Bangla music was felicitated as “Chiranabin Surasree” for her outstanding contribution to music not just in Bengal, but beyond borders. She also mesmerized the audience with her popular Bangla folk and Sufi numbers.

Jeet Ganguly was awarded “Royal Stag Make it Large award 2014”, for his outstanding contribution to both Hindi and Bengali music. He also made the audience sing to his tunes with his popular Hindi and Bangla numbers.

The biggest attraction of the night was the presence of the National Award winning actress Vidya Balan. Later she graced the stage with her charm. Prosenjit Chatterji, accompanied her on stage.

“Jaatishwar” was the film that swept all major awards this year bagging best album of the year, song of the year (“E Tumi Kemon Tumi”). Rupankar won the male vocalist of the year for “E Tumi Kemon Tumi” while Shreya Ghoshal won female vocalist of the year for “Bela Boye Jae” from ”Bunoh Haansh”. The veteran artist Kabir Suman won both the awards for best music composer (for “E Tumi Kemon Tumi”) and Lyricist of the year (for “Khudar Kasam Jaan” from “Jaatishwar”). “E Tumi Kemon Tumi” also won the Mirchi listeners’ choice award for best song while “Jaatishwar” was chosen by the listeners as the best album of the year.

Overall the Royal Stag Mirchi Music Awards Bangla 2014 was a grand celebration of music.

The Suave and Sexy Paoli Dam with Co-Star Kaushik Sen visits Presto Boutique to Launch Special Personalized Collection for Lovers


The lead actors of Ajana Batash- Paoli Dam and Kaushik Sen visited presto Boutique at South City Mall to launch the Presto Valentines’ Collection and also to promote their new film.


Keeping in mind the Valentines’ Day, Presto launched personalized monuments. In this collection, one can have their own picture with a famous monument of their choice. Paoli Dam and Kaushik Sen also came for the promotion of their upcoming Bengali film Ajana Batash. Directed by Anjan Das, the film is on loneliness, depressive disorder and related problems in the modern day city life. The film revolves around Deepa, her feelings, sufferings and the hurdles that she faces in her life and how she overcomes them.


Speaking at the occasion Paoli Dam said “I have highly admired the style and innovation of Presto. To get associated with it is like a dream come true”.
