Sudeshna-Roy-interview

Director duo Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha is back yet again with the next Zee Bangla Cinema Originals film titled “Abar Ekla Cholo”. The shooting is currently in progress in different parts of the city. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with director Sudeshna Roy in between shots and came to know some interesting facts about this soon to be aired film. Here is how it went….

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- So you are again directing a film for Zee Bangla Cinema Originals. Tell us something about this film.

Sudeshna Roy- Ekla Cholo, which was the first Zee Bangla Cinema Originals film, still holds the highest TRP among all the films under this segment. We are back yet again with the same mother-daughter duo in our next film titled Abar Ekla Cholo. Sayani and June play the mother-daughter duo of Riya and Ronita. Riya has given birth to her child and Ronita after taking her VRS spends time with her grandchild. However many daughters take their mothers for granted and this is what happens with this mother-daughter duo too. Riya takes leave from office on the pretext of taking care of her child but actually goes on a holiday, leaving the child with her mother. This hurts Ronita who feels like a governess for the child. Ronita’s boyfriend whom we showed in the earlier film has broken up with her. She watches a report on the television how a woman in her forties with the help of INVITRO process becomes a mother again. She decides to do that. The next part of the film is whether she is successful and how her daughter and the society react to her decision.

An interesting premise for sure!! Humor was an integral part of Ekla Cholo in spreading the message of single mothers. How are you treating the issue of INVITRO in this film?

Sudeshna Roy- Humor is the best weapon in these cases. You say an important and very serious thing in a light mannered way. And people will listen to you. That is what happened with Ekla Cholo. We are taking the same step for this film too. Or else it will become too preachy and chances are that the audiences will skip the film and watch something else on a different channel.

Apart from this, there are a whole lot of other issues too that you are showing in Abar Ekla Cholo..

Sudeshna Roy- True!! The changes in the mother-daughter relationship are what we are showcasing in this film. Ronita supported Riya and also guided her. However, after marriage Riya began taking her mother for granted. All these subtle equations have been shown deftly in this film. These changes happen for real in our day to day lives and people will be able to relate with them.

In this film it will be a kind of overturning o the tables. Riya took a certain decision in the earlier film and in this film Ronita takes a decision.

Where are you shooting for this film?

Sudeshna Roy- Narayani Studio (Joka), Upohar Complex, Vivekananda Park, Tero Parbon, Wise Owl café, streets of South Kolkata are the places where we are shooting the film.

A major portion of the earlier unit has been repeated for this film. You must be having fun shooting the film?

Sudeshna Roy- Yes, we are having great fun. This is also the first production of Abhijit and mine’s new production company Team Spirit too. So we also have added responsibilities. June and Sayani‘s chemistry is mind blowing. Indrajit Majumder as Rupam and Kaushik Sen as Dr. Bose are the new addition to this group. Kaushik is a wonderful actor and he brings the humor element amidst all the seriousness in the film. And Abhijit and I have done a cameo in this film too.

The screenplay is by Padmanabha Dasgupta and the DOP is Prabhatendu Mondal. The editing has been done by Sujoy Dutta Roy.

Is there any song in the film?

Sudeshna Roy- There is only one song in the film which has been written by Durba and sung by Ujjaini. The music has been composed by Savvy who also did the music for Ekla Cholo.

This is your maiden film under your new production house. What are your expectations from the film?

Sudeshna Roy- I will want the audiences to watch the film which will be the biggest support that they can provide us with. And if this film helps even a small percentage of the people undergoing INVITRO, we will consider our purpose served.

Abar Ekla Cholo is slated for airing in the month of June (tentatively). This surely will be as rib tickling and cerebrally engrossing as the earlier film Ekla Cholo. Our Best Wishes for the Dynamic Duo of Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha!!
