Writer Swapna Basu’s book “Ami Kakoli Mukherjee Bolchi” was recently released at an elaborate book release ceremony held at Bangla Academy. Apart from her book, twenty other books were also released at the ceremony organized by Pandulipi (Publisher and Book Seller). Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the writer in a candid chat about her recently released book and future plans..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Congratulations on your new book!! Can you tell us something about “Ami Kakoli Mukherjee Bolchi”?

Swapna Basu- Well, Thank you!! The book “Ami Kakoli Mukherjee Bolchi” is the story of a simple woman whom you will encounter in your everyday life. How she struggles in her life and achieves her goals is what the book is all about.

Is this your first published novel or have you written something before?

No, this is actually my second published novel. The first story was titled “Surupa”.

Please tell us more about what your first novel “Surupa” deals with?

Surupa was about a young and ambitious girl. She leaves her house. She is not even married to the boy she loves as her parents refuse to the match. In order to maintain her lifestyle, she engages in activities that the society does not accept. The story actually highlights the plight that the women in our society have to face in their day to day lives.

When did you start writing?

I began writing not in the formal way as many of you would expect it to be. When I used to go to office, I had a lot of time and the conversations I heard around me were later converted into stories. It was not a planned exercise. I heard stories which stayed back in my mind and I penned them down at a later time. Novels like Surupa began about ten years ago. I had never thought that these stories would be published. I simply wrote the story to just pen down my thoughts.

Both Surupa and Ami Kakoli Mukherjee Bolchi have women as the lead characters. Any special motivation behind writing such women oriented stories?

I am a woman and hence I understand women better. This is the reason why the lead characters in my stories are all females. Even my other unpublished stories have female characters (Sagarika, Haimabati) in pivotal roles.

What is the next story that you are planning to write?

I have nothing planned as such. Maybe a short story collection is next in line from me. These stories, like my two published novels will again have female lead characters in them.

Your stories have some very strong female characters and film makers today are exploring content having the feminist angle. Have you already been approached by any production house for a script?

I am not that famous yet to be approached by any production house. However, if I am ever approached I will have to think and look into various aspects before taking a decision.

Wishing the talented writer all the best! Hope her book is received well by the readers!!
