22nd Kolkata International Film Festival to Start Today; Country of Focus This Year is China

The press conference to announce the Kolkata International Film Festival was held in Nandan in the presence of Gautam Ghosh, Yadav Mondal, Atri Mukherjee and Arup Biswas.

The country of focus this time is China. Seven films of China will be showcased at the film festival. The regional focus is on Marathi cinema. Five Marathi films will be shown. The reason why Marathi films have been made the focus is simply because they are doing well regionally as well as internationally. The Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Mohan Agashe on 12th November. The inaugural film at the festival will be a Bengali film.


The master class is on 15th November while seminars will be held daily. Workshops will be held from 16th to 18th November at Nandan. Evening adda sessions will be held daily at the film lounge in Nandan.

The total number of films is 155 from 65 countries. Some of the different segments include International competition, Innovation in moving images, Asian select, Cinema international, Special tribute, Country focus, Regional focus, Indian select, Bengali panorama, Children’s screening, Centenary tribute, Short competition and others.


Some of the theatres and multiplexes where the films will be shown include Nandan 1-2-3, Mitra, Rabindra Sadan, Star Theatre, EZCC, Nazrul Tirtha, Roxy, Navina and others. Nandan 2 has 2K projection this time.

The inauguration will take place on 11th November at 5pm at Netaji Indoor Stadium. Celebrities who will grace the occasion include Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Kajol and Jaya Bachchan. The festival will continue till the 18th of November.

Bollywood Actress Vidya Balan releases coffee table book Antaryatra; A Book exploring Jayasri Burman’s journey from 1996 until 2015


Antaryatra, a coffee table book was recently released in the august presence of noted industrialist and art connoisseur Harshavardhan Neotia, National Award winning actress Vidya Balan and other eminent dignitaries. The book explores Jayasri Burman’s journey from 1996 until 2015, through her vibrant canvases and sculptures.  The book is produced by Ambica Beri, of Gallery Sanskriti. Media personality Pritish Nandy read some of the poetry composed by him on Jayasri Burman’s sculptures.

The book depicts a full journey from the artist’s earlier works right up to the myriad and mythical universes she has created into her drawings, paintings, sculptures. The three hundred page book has a foreword by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachhan, poems by Pritish Nandy, art critic Rajiv Chandran’s expansive exposition of Jayasri Burman’s work and conversations with Ina Puri, columnist and curator.


Vidya Balan said “I am happy to be a part of this book launch. Jayasri’s works are wonderful and soul stirring”.

The exhibition of 70 paintings and drawings and 14 large sculptures by Jayasri Burman was inaugurated the same evening by artists Sakti Burman and Ganesh Haloi. It will be showcased at the Birla Academy until the 27th of November and will then move to Gallery Sanskriti for the whole of December.
