New Bengali Film Fakebook Review; Young Cast and Fresh Concept Makes the Film a Delight to Watch

How many friends do you have on Facebook? How often do you check the number of likes and comments on your posts and pictures? Do you feel irritated when the net connection is a bit slow and you cannot log into Facebook as quickly as you wanted to? If all of the above are true for you, then you are truly a netizen (citizen of the internet). Director Sanjoy Bardhan’s latest release Fakebook is about the netizens and about the side effects of this extreme addiction to the digital world.

Hutum, who stays in a one room rented place with his family consisting of his father, mother, elder brother and sister, delivers newspaper to earn his livelihood. Their only hope of a better life rests on the bagging of a good government job by Hutum’s elder brother. Things take a turn when Rajorshi, Hutum’s best buddy opens his Facebook account. Hutum becomes friends with Payel, a Delhi based Bengali girl. Hutum soon falls in love with her and in order to meet her goes all the way to Delhi on a bicycle. However on reaching Delhi, he gets the shock of his life and his world turns upside down. What will Hutum do next? How will he accept the reality?

Director Sanjoy Bardhan’s film Fakebook is engaging and will appeal to both the youth and also to their parents too. The linear narrative used in the film helps in making the film easy to understand. How the youngsters become affected by the digital space and how their lives are affected have been dealt with effectively in this film. The director must be congratulated for actually taking up such a relevant topic and making an engaging film on it. The film does not have a boring scene and though the ending is quite predictable, it is enjoyable.

Music by Sandip Kar, Dolon-Mainakk is refreshing and the songs are hummable. E’ buker agoone’. is a good romantic track for sure.

Acting is the other strongpoint of this film apart from the concept. Gaurav Chakraborty as Hutum shines in the film. His mannerisms and his diction of a boy living in the suburbs of Kolkata are extremely credible. A middle aged woman seated beside me even was comparing his acting with his brother Arjun Chakraborty’s in Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2 (Where Arjun also played a similar character). Ridhima Ghosh as payel did not have much to do apart from looking pretty in the film. And she did that very effectively. Tanaji as Rajorshi is also good as Hutum’s best buddy. Indrasish Ray as the Jat boy shines in his small role. The actor must be appreciated for adopting the Haryanvi accent so well when for many a Bengali speaking actors, even speaking fluent Hindi comes off as a challenge.

Fakebook is one film which though may have a light hearted tone to it, speaks about the hard core reality of the lives of the youngsters in today’s times. A film not to be missed.
