Bollywood Hindi Film Dil Dhadakne Do Review; What Exactly was the Point?

What is the secret of making a successful film? A multi-star cast or a good story or great songs or picturesque locations? Well the answer to this question will be different for different individuals. Let’s see how the third directorial venture of Zoya Akhtar Dil Dhadakne Do having almost all the above essentials fared.

The story is essentially about the Mehras (based in Delhi), a rich high class business family consisting of Kamal Mehra, his wife, their son and daughter. The son Kabir, aged twenty five wants to pursue a career in aviation as opposed to his family’s wish of taking over the business (despite having no interest in it). The daughter Ayesha is married and runs her own business successfully and even featured in a reputed magazine’s list of successful entrepreneurs. Even then she is not asked to take over the family business, because she is a girl and married. Kamal and his wife have no love in their marriage and they just tolerate each other. The members of the Mehra family have a transforming experience when they set out on a cruise trip to celebrate the anniversary of Kamal and his wife.

Zoya Akhtar is one of those few directors who have set very high standards with their works. Her last film, the super successful Zindegi Milegi Na Dobara has been watched and re-watched several times. But can we do the same for Dil Dhadakne Do? Well, not really!! Like Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara, this film is also about a trip which changes lives and people’s perspectives. But the earlier film had its heart at the right place. This film has too many characters for comfort. I understand it is an anniversary party trip with many friends and relatives, but still there are many unwanted characters who the director could have avoided. It looks like a page from one of the novels of Jane Austen!! The last scene where the whole family becomes adamant to save Kabir looks like a scene from the Sajid Khan movies. That is not what we expect from Zoya!!

The length of the film is another pain in all the wrong places. At 170 minutes, the film is way too long. Had the film been half as entertaining as Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara, it would be easy to sit through the film. The editor did not do the job assigned to him properly. He should have chopped away scenes liberally and made the film half an hour short, at the least!!

Many may oppose my comparing DDD with Zindegi but the comparison becomes obvious because Zoya herself had set a high bench mark with the previous Hindi film ZNMD!! Hence comparisons are bound to happen. The film showcases the journey wonderfully and places like Spain and other international locales are also beautifully highlighted. However, the much hyped cruise had some shots of the cruise ship and fleeting glimpses of places like Istanbul or a Hamam Bar. The director could have shown the cast exploring different places and that would have taken the film to another level. Most of the scenes happen within the ship. The cruise does not get highlighted much. Then why all the promotional hype about the ship?? And about Pluto Mehra, the dog of the Mehras!! He is just another pet who is the narrator of the film. But he has pretty less to do, apart from imparting knowledge on relationships and human values. How I wish the director would have done something interesting with Pluto.

Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a big letdown. The songs are too loud and I doubt whether it will remain with you after you leave the hall.

Acting by the huge cast consists of some good performances and some mediocre performances. Anushka’s Farah needed fine tuning. The song Girls like to Swing looked like as if Anushka stepped in the set after completing Bombay Velvet. Priyanka Chopra is OK as Ayesha but one expects more from such a powerful actress. The director just makes her cry. I mean a lady who can run a business which gets featured in Forbes will at least be able to speak her mind once in a while. But she cannot do that when confronted by her family and her in-laws about her divorce. That is very strange!! Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah as Mr and Mrs Mehra are good as the money minded individuals who show off and also can marry their son to a rich tycoon’s daughter to save the business. Ranveer Singh shines brightly amongst the lot. The actor brings in the much needed humor in the film and is a bundle of energy. His confrontation scene with his parents deserves praise.

Dil Dhadakne Do is like a cup of cappuccino!! The director just places the characters at the froth level and never delves deep inside. Hence the film lacks the vibrancy and lively spirit of Zindegi!! While watching the film, the only thing that kept crossing my mind was Anupam Roy’s song Gobheer e Jaao!! Had high hopes from this New Bollywood Hindi Film but Alas!!

The actor along with Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani was present in Kolkata for the promotions of the upcoming Hindi film Dil Dhadakne Do.

The film Dil Dhadakne Do, directed by Zoya Akhtar is the story of a Punjabi family on a cruise trip. Speaking about their experiences of shooting on the cruise, actor Farhan Akhtar (who is also producing the film along with Ritesh Sidhwani) said “The ship could not sail during the first seven days. We waited for the ship to get rid of the technical difficulties. When after a week, we finally sailed, we were all so very ecstatic”. Ranveer Singh was speechless on sharing screen space with Anil Kapoor during the shooting of the film. “I have always looked up to him. I wanted to be like him. When on the first day I found that the scene demanded me to stand beside him and stare at the rising sun, I was speechless. My happiness knew no bounds”.

Ranveer Singh who will be sharing screen space with Anushka Sharma after a few years praised the actress for her dedication, hard work and her evolution as an actress over the years.

Gallan Goodiyan is one song which made all the actors’ heart beat louder than the normal pace. “Imagine us dancing to a song of four minutes duration non-stop!! My goodness, it was one hell of an experience. I just hope that the audience likes our one shot dancing extravaganza” said Ranveer Singh, who plays Kabir Mehra in the film.

The actresses of the film consisting of Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah were not present at the occasion. “Anushka is not well, as many of you might know from news. Priyanka and Shefali are busy with their other film schedules and hence they could not turn up. However we are having a grand time as this is a boy’s day out. We will be heading to watch the IPL match and I will be supporting Mumbai Indians” said Ranveer Singh.

Pluto, the dog will be seen in an important role in the film. “He is actually the hero and we are the supporting actors and actresses” said Anil Kapoor with a smile.

Taking cue from what he said, Farhan added “In one scene he was to run up to me and lick my face. The dog is also an actor and he was not in the mood that day for the scene. So I had to put vanilla ice cream on my face so as to tempt the dog to come and lick my face. It was a hilarious experience”.

On the request of the assembled guests and the media personnel, the actors also broke to a jig to the song “Gallan Goodiyan”.

The trailer and the songs have already gained much popularity amongst the masses. The audiences will have to wait till the 5th of June to understand what adrenaline rush the film promises.

The team of the upcoming Bollywood film Dil Dhadakne Do consisting of Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, producer Ritesh Sidhwani and Ranveer Singh was spotted at the IPL finals between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. The four men were in the city to promote their upcoming Hindi film Dil Dhadakne Do in the city.

The actress’ of the film however were not spotted along with the actors. While Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah were busy shooting for some other films, Anushka Sharma did not make it to the match due to her sickness. However there have been many speculations about her decision. The actress who is a cricket lover is mostly found cheering from the stands when Virat Kohli plays in a particular match. Can we deduce that since Virat’s team did not make it to the finals, she chose not to make an appearance? Or is it something deeper than that? With ex-boyfriend Ranveer Singh at her side, she did not want to land up in any more controversies regarding her personal life? Whatever may be the reason, the crowd missed the ladies.

However the actors could be seen cheering from the stands as they supported their home team Mumbai Indians, who also emerged victorious this IPL Tournament. Later the actors’ also posted pictures of them celebrating after the win on Tweeter.

With the actors’ engaging in so much publicity and promotions for the film, the audiences will surely be interested to watch this new Bollywood Entertainer on 5th June. The countdown has started and lets if the magic of Zoya Akhtar is able to make the heart of the audience beat to her tune!!.

Bollywood Hero Ranbir Kapoor and Actress Anushka Sharma visit Kolkata to promote their Upcoming Bollywood Hindi Film ‘Bombay Velvet’

Video: New Hindi Film Bombay Velvet Promotions in Kolkata

Bollywood stars Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor were in Kolkata to promote their upcoming Bollywood Hindi Film Bombay Velvet which revolves around the life of a boxer named Johnny Balraj and a bar singer Rosie. How their dreams and hopes collide with their individual realities is what the story is all about. The film is based on a book by Gyan Prakash titled Mumbai Fables.

“It is indeed very disheartening at times when people make such a drastic comment on the personal lives of the stars. The thing that happened with Anushka was very bad. I understand that the people want to know much about our lives, but one must always keep in mind that our personal lives should not be turned into gossip stories” said Ranbir Kapoor at the promotion of the upcoming Bollywood film Bombay Velvet in Kolkata.

“Well, I had to understand the nuances of singing like a jazz singer. The singing style is different and hence I trained myself to suit the role well. Neeti Mohan had done a great job with the songs and I wanted to do my job in a fitting manner. Hopefully the audiences will be able to relate the song sung by Neeti with the lip syncing that I have done in the film” said Anushka Sharma.

Both the actors opined that working with Karan Johar was a delightful experience. “Karan is a multi-talented individual. Director, television show anchor, reality show judge and what not!! He never came to the sets with a baggage that he was a reputed director. He came as a newbie actor who wanted to learn many things about acting. It was great shooting with him. He even took advices on acting from me. I am looking forward to acting under his direction” said Ranbir Kapoor.

When questioned about her working chemistry with Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor respectively, Anushka revealed that working with Ranbir Kapoor was a better and fulfilling experience than working with Ranveer Singh.

A part of the film was also to be shot in Kolkata. However it could not happen due to financial constraints, revealed Ranbir. “Bringing such a big crew to Kolkata and shooting at the docks required a huge budget. Since that was not possible, the shoot at Kolkata had to be cancelled. The docks were recreated on the sets in Mumbai” said Ranbir. The actor also will be back in Kolkata in August to shoot for one of his upcoming Hindi films.

Marriage is on the cards for both the actors. Anushka mentioned that marriage is not something that one could hide and she would reveal to the media once she decides on getting married. Ranbir said “The next step is always marriage, kids, family. But I am just 32(smiles). I do not want to comment anything now. If I say anything a Pandora’s Box will open and it will go on and on. Hence I am keeping my mouth shut at the moment on my relationship status or marriage”.

Directed by Anurag Kashyap, Bombay Velvet releases on May 15.

Pepsi IPL 2015 Kick Starts with Grand Opening Ceremony in Kolkata; KKR adds to the Thrill by winning First Home Match

Rain, Rain go to Spain, Because IPL is here again!! Many seated in the audience may have been saying this in their hearts when Nature tried to play spoilsport during the opening ceremony of the Indian Premiere League. However, owed to the high spirits of the audience and performers alike, the IPL opening ceremony took off with a blast.

The IPL opening ceremony started about one and a half hours after the allotted time. The moment the event started, thirty thousand audiences applauded and cheered, proving their support for the two month long cricket tournament.

The opening ceremony had a high dose of Bollywood glitz and glamour. Shahid Kapoor, Pritam, Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar all were present at the venue to entertain the audiences and set the mood for the opening match.

Two performances drew the biggest applause from the audience. One was the performance of the handsome hunk Hrithik Roshan to “Ek pal ka jeena” from his film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain. The actor in his forties proved yet again why he is the heartthrob of millions. Well choreographed dance steps and his moves made the audience fall in love again with the hottest dude of Tinsel town.

The other performance which received similar applause was the one by Anushka Sharma. And as was expected, the moment she came on stage, the audience could be heard shouting out “Virat, Virat”.

The bad weather however was the reason for the cancellation of the laser show which was scheduled for the opening ceremony. About half an hour of the program was also cut so as to complete the show quickly due to the fluctuations in the weather.

With IPL kick starting with such pomp and show, we can all hope that the two month long tournament will give us enough moments of thrills and excitement.
