20th Kolkata International Film Festival comes to an End; Iranian Lady Director wins the Golden Royal Bengal Tiger Award

Seven days of film viewing came to an end on the 17th of November with the closing ceremony of the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival. The event took place at Nazrul Mancha. Eminent personalities like Prasenjit Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, Paul Cox, Meghan Mylan, Amol Palekar, Farah Khan, Ranjit Mullick and Ministers Amit Mitra, Subrata Mukherjee, Arup Biswas and Firhad Hakim were present at the closing ceremony event.

The film festival this time turned competitive, which is a first in the history of this festival. Raksun Bani Etemader, the female director from Iran won the Golden royal Bengal Tiger for her film Tales. She won a cash prize of fifty one lakhs, but she was not present at the occasion to take the prize. A film from Israel titled Self Made by Shira Gaffen got the special mention award from the Jury.

The closing ceremony also witnessed a spirited performance by Sohoj Ma and Kartick Das Baul who sang Baul songs and helped the foreign dignitaries to understand the rich cultural heritage of Kolkata.

Despite the absence of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, she was mentioned in the spirited speech given by Minister Amit Mitra on the occasion. He said “Under the able guidance and leadership of Mamata Banerjee, what Bengal is doing today, the whole world will be doing the same thing tomorrow”.

The closing ceremony was a grand affair but when compared to the glamorous opening ceremony of the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival, it was a little toned down affair. However we wish that the efforts to make the film festival grand will continue in future.
