Nawazuddinn Siddiqui, Niharika Singh and director Ashim Ahluwalia were in Kolkata to promote their New Movie “ Miss Lovely ”. The press conference for this film took place at Hotel Hindustan International Kolkata.
Miss Lovely is a film which is set in the criminal depths of Mumbai’s C-grade (horror and porn film) industry. The story is primarily about the Duggal brothers who produce sleazy sex horror films in the mid 1980’s. The movie explores the intense and mutually destructive relationship between the younger sibling Sonu Duggal(Nawazuddin) and his elder brother Vicky(Anil George). Sonu finds himself drawn to a mysterious young woman named Pinky (Niharika Singh) which eventually leads to his downfall.
Speaking about the film, Ashim Ahluwalia said “The stylized form, densely layered narrative, period costumes and production design simultaneously conveys a pulp style and contemptuous modernity. The film constantly switches between genre pieces and is a part love story, part documentary and part melodrama”. This is the first feature film of the director who wants to stay away from making commercial factory productions genre of movies. The film has been shot on a combination of Kodak Super 16 and 35 mm films in widescreen.
Nawazuddin while sharing his experience of working with Niharika Singh said, “The first day I came to know I have to work with a model as my co-actor, I was nervous. However when we began acting, I found her to be honest, easy going and comfortable to work with”. This is Nawazuddin’s first film in a lead role and the actor is sort of happy at having bagged a role as the lead. He also laid stress on the fact that he will be looking for more such lead roles in this year.
Niharika Singh, the winner of Femina Miss India Earth 2005 revealed that she had been warned by her friends not to do such a film like Miss Lovely. “This is not the typical Friday release that audiences are habituated at watching. This is a new kind of film which aims at addressing an issue” said the pretty actress who is yet to make her mark in Bollywood. The actress had done many films which did not release. “I do not have any god father in the industry to guide me. I did films earlier which came my way. Now I will pick the films on the basis of the script and the director” added the actress.
The film has competed in the Un-Certain regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. It has also been screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. Miss Lovely is scheduled for commercial release in India on January 17, 2014.
