Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2016 announcement

Apeejay Surrendra Group and Oxford Bookstores announced the much awaited Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2016 (AKLF 2016) at Oxford Bookstore. The literary festival in its seventh edition will be held in Kolkata from 14th to 17th January 2016. Present at the announcement press conference was Aparna Sen, Ashoke Vishwanathan, Maina Bhagat, Anjum Katyal, Stephane Amalir, Anuradha Lohia, Saira Shah Halim and others.

The festival will also celebrate the hidden charms of the city through walks at the various heritage sites and magnificent public monuments. Among the other themes of this literary festival, AKLF 2016 will also be commemorating the 125th anniversary of Dame Agatha Christie, Queen of Crime Fiction. This will see the launch of “A for Arsenic: the poisons of Agatha Christie” by Kathryn Harkup, in association with UK’s leading Crime Writing Festival, Bloody Scotland!!

Aparna Sen who was also present at the press conference said “I am really thrilled and excited that my film Saari Raat based on playwright Badal Sircar’s play will be showcased at the inaugural day of this literary festival. This is a great honor and I am glad that the organizers actually included a film in the literary festival”. The film will be shown at Nandan. Badal Sircar: Towards a theatre of Conscience will also be launched on the same day.

The festival will see book launches by Ben Okri, Lord Meghnad Desai, Vir Sanghvi, Christine Manfield, Meera Syal and others. A host of literary initiatives like Poetry Café with city poets, literary heritage photo walks, blogger sessions, motivational sessions and other such things will take place in the literary festival.

The four day long literary festival will surely entice the audiences and expose them to the multifarious nature of art and literature.

Starmark, in association with Poetry Paradigm hosts Poetry Book Launch

Kolkata’s leading bookstore chain Starmark, in association with Poetry Paradigm, played host to the launch of two books of poems at its Quest Mall outlet. The two books were Ananya Chatterjee’s The Blind Man’s Rainbow and Joie Bose’s Corazon Roto and Sixty Nine Other Treasons.

Present at the launch were Rita Bhimani, Barun Chanda, Jayant Kripalani and Ashoke Vishwanathan who took part in a lively and interesting discussion on the two books which followed their launches. Thereafter, Ananya Chatterjee and Joie Bose signed their books at a book signing session.

Both the launch and the discussion were moderated by Arthur Cardozo, who is himself a poet, cartoonist, writer and advertising professional. Like the two authors, he is also an active member of the Poetry Paradigm group of poets.

The books are available at Starmark and also at other book stores in the city.

Bengali Audio Music Album of Upcoming Film Dramadol Launched

The music launch of the upcoming Bengali film Dramadol took place at Innra Guest House in the presence of Director Kamal Roy, Arijit Dutta, Ashoke Vishwanathan, Tilottoma Dutta, music director Soumitro Kundu and others.

Dramadol is a comedy film. The film showcases family bonding, emotions, faith, love and relationships. The underlying message of the film is humanity is superior to all.

The film boasts of a stellar cast consisting of Rajesh Sharma, Labani Sarkar, Pratik Sen, Ashmita Mukherjee, Raja Mallik, Tilottoma Dutta, Ashoke Vishwanathan, Sumit Ghoshal and Arijit Dutta in important roles.

The film has four tracks. There are two versions of a song titled Kolkata 1 and Kolkata 2. Chandrika Bhattacharya, Sujoy Bhowmick, Piku, Pritikona, Sujata Nandi, Subhasish, Arup Sarkar, Sraboni Banerjee, Toton Kumar have lent their voices to the four songs in the film.

The music has been brought out by Rooh Media Pvt Ltd and the film is slated for release soon.

Dramadol is a comedy film. The movie begins with Akash who is a bank employee by profession. He stays at a PG in Kolkata and was raised at an orphanage. One day Akash finds the PG demolished by a promoter for a new construction. He begins to look for a new flat. He likes one flat but the owner refuses to give him the flat as he does not have a family. Seeing Akash’s problems, the broker takes him to Samadhan, who is a clever cheater. How does Akash get a house on rent and whether Samadhan is able to solve Akash’s problems is what the film is all about.

Speaking at the occasion, director Kamal Roy said “The film has emotions, family bonding, relationships, faith and love. This will indeed be a complete entertainer that one can watch with family”.

The story of Dramadol is by Shyamakanta Das while the script has been penned by Srikanta Dasgupta. The music of the film has been composed by Soumitro Kundu.

Dramadol has Rajesh Sharma, Laboni Sarkar, Pratik Sen, Ashmita Mukherjee, Raja Mullick, Tilottoma Dutta, Ashoke Vishwanathan, Suchandra Chowdhury, Arijit Dutta and Sumit Ghosal in pivotal roles.

Calcutta Debating Circle puts Media under the Scanner; Three Day Long Festival of the Spoken Word commences December 13

In a unique collaboration, the Calcutta Debating Circle along with Kolkata Sukriti foundation jointly announced the launch of the greatest debating festival in the city at a press conference held at The Calcutta Club premises. The press conference was addressed by Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Dr. Sandip Chatterjee and Mr. Pradeep Gooptu along with other dignitaries.


Calcutta Debating Circle Festival Announced

Over the span of the past few years, the Calcutta Debating Circle has been inviting students from the leading universities across the world to participate in the debates and lead to discussions to enhance understanding of all the world is currently witnessing. This year will be no exception as students from all over the world will come to participate in the three daylong events.

“I had been advised by many people not to organize such events in Kolkata. Many people told me that these events were strictly for cities like Mumbai or Delhi. But I opposed them and I started this event in my city. The three daylong debate will help in understanding the various aspects of the media. Media is an important part of our lives and having a clear idea about it is of utmost importance. Moreover not many of us are well aware of the subtle nuances of speaking publicly. The debate will help many to understand this easily” said Dr. Kunal Sarkar.

The inauguration will take place on the 13th of December at the Victoria Memorial Hall. The subject for the first day is a panel discussion on the topic ‘Media clutter has compromised credibility’. For the second day, “objectivity in media is pretence” has been selected as the subject for the international debate at The Calcutta Club. The third day will witness interactive sessions with students. The topics for discussion are Television is dead, long live social media and Justice has been hijacked by the media. The event of the third day will take place at The Heritage Institute.

Some of the illustrious Indian speakerswho will participate in the festival shall include noted film director Ashoke Vishwanathan, Jawhar Sircar (Prasar Bharati), actor Victor Banerjee, Paroma Chowdhury (Google), Rajdeep Sardesai (Headlines Today), Kishore Bhimani (sports journalist) and others. Among the speakers from overseas, Javed Umair, Brendan Miller, Jil Robinson, Rob Hopkin, Mehmal Sarfraz will feature in the debates and discussions.

The three day long debates and discussions look interesting and will make for good knowledge sharing sessions for people interested in the spoken word.
