20th Kolkata International Film Festival to Host Special Platform for Films by Women Directors

The initial press conference of the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival was recently held to brief the media about all that can be expected from the 20th edition of this gala affair and it was announced that films by women directors will be the prime area of focus in the upcoming 20th Kolkata International Film Festival.

Present at the press conference were industry stalwarts Gautam Ghoshe, Ranjit Mullick, Atri Bhattacharya, Deepankar De, Yadab Mondal, Alokojjal Bandopadhyay, Nachiketa and Ritobrata Bhattacharya.

The opening ceremony of the 20th Kolkata International Film Festival will take place at Netaji Indoor Stadium on 10th November. Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Tanuja, Irfaan Khan, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhisekh Bachchan have consented to be present at the inaugural ceremony. Pandit Bickram Ghosh, Ustad Rashid Khan, Usha Uthup and Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar will perform to “A tribute towards cinema”.

Speaking at the occasion, Ranjit Mullick said “This is the first time we have made the film festival competitive in nature. Women directors from all over the world have submitted their films in this competition. From the 72 entries we have received, we have shortlisted 15 films for the festival. The winner will be presented with the Royal Bengal Trophy along with a lucrative cash prize”.

The sections in this year’s film festival include International competition (women director’s films), Inaugural film, Great master, Centenary tribute, Retrospective, New horizon, Focus on Arabian countries, Asian select and Special screening. Exhibitions, master classes, Panel discussions, Seminar and Interactive sessions are some of the events that will take place during the seven day film festival.

137 feature films along with 118 short films and documentaries will be shown to the audience during the festival. A special tribute will be paid to late actress Suchitra Sen. Seven of her films will be shown at the festival including Megh Kalo, Aandhi, Chawa Pawa, Harano Sur, Devdas and others.

The venues for the film screenings include EZCC, Nandan, Mitra, Sisir Mancha, Navina, Uttam Mancha, City Centre 1, Nandan 1, Nandan 2, Nandan 3, Nazrul Tirtho and Roxy.

Paul Cox, Niki Karimi, Renhua Na, Amol Palekar and Nino Kirtadze are the jury members of this film festival for the international segment. For the NETPAC segment Sudhir Nandgaonkar, Kim Do Kyung and Somnath Gupta will be the judges.

Centenary tribute will be paid to The Sound of Music, Jighangsa and The Guns of Navarone. The Satyajit Ray Memorial lecture will be given by Govind Nihalani. Some films which will be having their world premiere include Chaar Odhyay, Jhumura, The Kite and others.

The theme music of the film festival has been composed by popular Kolkata singer Nachiketa. “The first two lines of the song are from a poem written by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “Jokon tomar bhangbe ghum/ Setai tomar sokal” are the two lines. Moumita have lent her voice to these lines in the song” said Nachiketa.

This film festival will also take place in Siliguri from the 19th to 25th of November.

The closing ceremony will take place on the 17th of November at Nazrul Tirtho. Rani Mukherjee and Farah Khan have consented to come to the ceremony on that day. Awards will be given to the winners by the esteemed guests.

Now that biggest of all Bengali festivals Durga Puja as well as Diwali and Jagadhatri Puja are over, Kolkata shall soon start gearing for a seven day long Film Festival that is celebrated with equal pomp and show in the City of Joy.
