Interview: Tollywood Actress Paoli Dam on Her Experience of Working In Mandobasar Galpo (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Video: Paoli Dam on Her new film Mandobasar Galpo

In an exclusive conversation with actress Paoli Dam about her upcoming Bengali film Mandobasar Galpo, Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent got to know many new facets about the role that she plays in the film. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You play a film director in the film. Tell us something about the role.

Paoli Dam- I play the role of Ahana Sen who is an acclaimed film maker. She loses her beloved, her lover which becomes a source of tragedy in her life. She stays away from work. However due to a friend Dr. Sayantan Chowdhury, (played by Parambrata), she is made to again enter the mainstream and do her work. Is she able to do it? Watch the film to know more (laughs).

You play a film maker. How was the experience?

Paoli Dam- It was a wonderful experience. This is the first time I play a character of a film maker. The thing that caught my attention more was the fact that the psychological side of the lady has been shown more than the professional side. What trauma she had to undergo due to the loss and the effects it had on her life has been shown well.

This is the first time that you have worked with Tathagata Banerjee. How was he as a director?

Paoli Dam- Well, it was a good experience. The film is a thriller and he has added enough twists and turns in the film to keep the audiences hooked.

From Kaalbela to Mandobasar Galpo, you have worked with Parambrata in so many films. How was it again shooting with him?

Paoli Dam- We understand each other so well now. The comfort level that we have in real life shows on screen too!! As always, I had a good time shooting with Parambrata.

The music has been getting positive reviews. Which is your favorite track in the film?

Paoli Dam- (smiles) This is a difficult question!! I love the songs of Anupam and Annwesha very much. The songs help in taking the story forward. Not a single song is there all of a sudden. It all blends in well with the narrative.

Wishing Paoli Dam all the best for Mandobasar Galpo which releases on 24th of March!!

New Bengali Film Britto Movie Review; An Average Fare but for the Talented Ena

Britto is a Bengali word which means a circle. This can refer to circle of life too. In this circle of life, comes deceit, love friendship and all the other human values and emotions. Recently released film Britto deals with these myriad human emotions.

Bitto begins with the marriage of Rony and Mrittika. As the film proceeds, we are shown that Rony is just the average guy with no special skill at his disposal and with no ambition in his life. He fails to keep his job and also earns a fixed income for his family. Mrittika who is mature for her age takes up the job of an escort and pulls the family out of the financial crisis. However she looks for love and due recognition, which she gets from Debdatta. She gets the opportunity to make her name as a singer. But can she go beyond her past life as an escort and make a new beginning? Does love come to her? Britto has the answer to all these questions.

Director Surajit Dhar’s narrative style has an element of restraint which makes it for an interesting watch. However the patience of the audience is also tested due to the dragging of many scenes and situations. One could have refrained from doing so. However one question that I have for the director is why does a woman from a lower middle class background have to resort to prostitution to fend for her family; does it not demean the woman who is capable of so much more? She may not be enough educated but there are always other respectable means of earning! You definitely need to start thinking out of the box Mr. Director!

The camera work by Amlan Dutta deserves a special mention. He has done a great job with the camera angles and this raises the film viewing experiences a few notches higher.

Gaurab Chatterjee’s background score and Shankha Bandopadhyay’s music is soothing and pleasing for the ears.

The biggest revelation in the film is none other than Ena Saha who delivers a credible performance as Mrittika. She plays the role of the twenty something wife with gusto and lights up the screen in the simple cotton saris, the oil smeared hair and the kohl rimmed eyes. The actress has come a long way from her television days. She truly justified her claim that the audiences will get to see her in a new avatar in this film. She surely lives up to the expectations.

Vikram as the good for nothing husband Rony is also good in his part. Joy as Debdutta is also a fitting addition to the acting list in the film. Soumitra Chatterjee and Alokananda Roy have nothing substantial to do in this film.

Overall, Britto with all its good and bad is neither a bad film nor an excellent one. It is an average film that could have been made sensational with a little bit of intelligent treatment. People may want to go to the theaters to watch Britto only if they want to watch the gorgeous Ena in an all new avatar as for the rest, it is all a below average fare that you may not want to waste your money on, especially when there is so much of Puja shopping yet to be done.

Interview: Actress Ena Saha on her New Bengali Movie ‘Britto’ and her Journey into Films

Having mesmerized the audience with her mind blowing performances in serials like Subhasini, Maa, Bou Kotha Kou and others, she stepped into films and did not waste a moment to make it big in the industry; she is none other than the breathtakingly beautiful and talented actress Ena Saha. The actress who made a mark with her role in the recently released Bengali Film Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2 is gearing up for her next release Britto. Ena talks about her character in the film and her expectations from herself in a casual chat with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent Priyanka Dutta. Excerpts…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou were literally ruling the small screen before diving into films; what brought about the decision to shift and in this small time span how did Britto come about?

Ena Saha– I was doing a lot of serials at the time when the offers for film started to come. Initially I could not do it as time clashed or the directors did not allow me to do films. However I got selected for Raj Chakraborty’s Bojhena Se Bojhena film. Then Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2 happened. It was during the promotions for Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2 that I was doing the shooting for Britto.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou moved from television to films. How is the experience of working in the two mediums?

Ena Saha– Frankly, I have had a great time working in television and I am also having a great time working in films. I love both the mediums.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaNow that you are totally into films, what kind of projects would you agree to work in television again if offers came by?

Ena Saha– Well, an interesting project will be surely something that I will be taking up. I do not have any such special criteria in my mind for the selection of the project. The only criterion is that the project has to be interesting.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaTell us something about the character you play in Britto.

Ena Saha– I play the role of Mrittika who is a girl in her early twenties hailing from a lower middle class background. Despite her young age, she is mature. She always wants to move forward and when her husband Rony is unable to take the responsibility of the family, she carries the responsibility on her shoulders.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaCan you at all identify with Mrittika?

Ena Saha– There is no similarity actually. I am immature and confused. But the character that I play in the film is matured. She can take any decision instantly and this is something that I just cannot do.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhy did you take up this role?

Ena Saha– I have always been projected as a sweet, bubbly girl and this has now become something very obvious. So when this role was offered to me, I took it up as a challenge to see how well can I do some serious and matured stuff.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHow was the experience of working with Vikram and Joy?

Ena Saha– Vikram, though completely mad to the power of infinity is a darling and a great co-artist who has supported me throughout the shoot of the film.

And for Joy da, he never behaved like a senior. He had gelled with so well and not for a single moment did he ever try to throw his weight around and intimidate us.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– You were highly appreciated for your role in Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2 and your past performances has obviously raised the expectations of the audience. How do you think will the film do at the box office?

Ena Saha– I am under a lot of pressure and stress at the moment. I just hope that people will appreciate our efforts as we all have worked very hard for the film. I have already been getting wonderful responses from people via messages after the trailer launch and I just hope they like the film in a similar manner.

Britto releases on the 5th of September, 2014. Sholoana Bangaliana wishes Ena and the team of Britto all the Very Best and Hopes that the film will become a landmark, both in Ena’s career as well as the Bengali Film Industry.

Interview: Actress Pujarini Ghosh on Acting in Films and Theater and Debut Bengali Film Chitra

Every industry needs young blood to survive and prosper. And Tollywood has no dearth of young talents. Pujarini Ghosh is one talented actress who will be soon making her debut as a lead actress in Upcoming Bengali Film Chitra and also in a smaller but meaningful role in Mainak Bhaumik’s Kolkata Calling. In a candid conversation with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent, the actress revealed much about her dreams and aspirations.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaTell us something about your growing up years.

Pujarini Ghosh– Well, I did my schooling from South Point School and just completed my masters from Jadavpur University.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhen did the acting bug bit you?

Pujarini Ghosh– When I was a kid! I started acting at the age of 5. I have done some hundred stage shows! So yes this is a very old love story. I was always known to be a drama-queen. At that age I would wrap myself up in my mom’s sari spend hours singing, dancing, acting and talking to myself in front of the mirror. It was in me ever since I was born. My grand mom was a wonderful theatre actor, so you can say I carry that in my genes. But yes it was extremely tough for me to convince my parents when I told them that I want to take up acting as my profession as I come from a very conservative family.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou have a background in theatre. How has that helped in your acting in films?

Pujarini Ghosh– Theatre I would say is the base of an actor. It teaches you to act without restrictions. When we work in front of the camera our actions are restricted by a lot of things like the camera angles the frames. But stage gives you absolute freedom. You learn the basics of acting only in theatre which helps you when you work in films. It’s just that when you face the camera you have to be bit intelligent to understand the basic differences between the two. In my case winning the Best Actress Award at The All India Theatre Competition helped me boost my confidence. But I evolve everyday as an actor when I face the camera. There are so many things to learn.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhich theater groups have you been associated with all this while?

Pujarini Ghosh– Charbak and Janhabi Sanskriti Chakra are the groups with which I have worked in theater.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaAre you continuing with theatre or has it taken a backseat due to commitments in films?

Pujarini Ghosh– Sadly yes! It has taken a backseat. I am too busy with the promotions and a lot of other things right now. But an actor can never leave stage completely. So I might work in both sometimes soon. The director of Janhabi is a great friend; he keeps sending some good scripts but I am waiting for something extraordinary and fresh so that I can return to the stage with a bang!

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou are workingas the lead actress in a full length Bengali film Chitra in the lead role. Can you shed some light on the character?

Pujarini Ghosh– I am lucky to be the female protagonist in a film like Chitra which draws references from real life attacks on women in recent times. Chitra is a romantic thriller with a strong social message. This film happened to me by chance. I was the last minute entry. A huge number of girls auditioned for the film but my very first dialogue during my audition convinced my director Abhigyan that I am his Chitra. So I would say the film chose me to be her Chitra. Chitra is young, extremely loveable, confident, and she feels strongly about expressing her opinion. She is all what a modern woman can relate to.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaMainak Bhaumik’s Kolkata Calling is another film in which you have acted. Can you throw some light on the character you play in that film?

Pujarini Ghosh– Despite being in a smaller role, I am lucky to be chosen by Mainak in the beautiful collage of three stories in retro-hued Kolkata Calling. And when in your first film you get to share the credits with some of the finest actors of Tollywood, like Moonmoon Sen, Riya Sen, Raima Sen, Rwitwik Chakroborty, Kaushik Sen, Biswanath Basu and others, what more can you ask for. I was the part of one of the three stories with Raima Sen and Samrat Chakraborty. I played Samrat’s ex-girlfriend Sohini. But I only had scene with Samrat.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaHow was the experience of working in Kolkata Calling? Was Mainak Bhaumik intimidating or as cool and casual as his outward appearance?

Pujarini Ghosh– The time spent on the sets of Kolkata Calling will always remain very special. I got lucky to learn a lot from so many senior actors. Mainak is an extremely loving individual. I was pampered by Mainak despite being a newbie in the industry. He spoilt me completely. The first time I met him I thought he will be like a strict director. But as Day 2 followed I found him to be an amazing person to be with, to know and to be friends with. Mainak is a brilliant director; he is extremely polite, down to earth, understanding, very knowledgeable and he knows the tactics of bringing out the best in his actors. He knows exactly what he wants before he comes to the set and has a beautiful way of narrating scenes and roles. More importantly, his ability to read through the layers of the female psyche is brilliant which further made things very simple for me.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Abhigyan is a debutant director while Mainak has directed quite a few films. How was it working with both of them?

Pujarini Ghosh– Abhigyan is young and very talented. The very first time I met him I was surprised, I thought to myself; “he is of my age and he will be directing”?! Then as the work started I was taken aback by his sense of responsibility, his knowledge about films and the way he has handled the shoot. I was really amazed to see his maturity as a filmmaker. Abhigyan is strict as a director. But Mainak is very chilled out even on the sets. It’s evident that thousands of things are going on in his mind but he will never let that affect the unit no matter what! You will always find him cracking jokes and smiling. I am very lucky to have worked with both of them.

Piyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaIn both Chitra and Kolkata Calling you are sharing screen space with some veteran actors. How has that helped you?

Pujarini Ghosh– Of course it has helped me a lot. When I see such great actors in front of my eyes, it inspires me! Although I am a new girl but they way this industry is accepting me I really feel blessed! I am lucky to be given tips by them. Many of them have shared their experiences. The thought of working with such veteran actors would give me goose bumps. It was sheer luck that I got to work with such names in my debut film. In Chitra I have shared the screen space with actor-director Sudeshna Roy. She is a gem of a person; one can learn so much from her. Everyone I have met so far has been extremely supportive and loving. I have grown up watching them on screen and now when I realize I actually have started working with them it sends a chill down my spine. This is truly a blessing!

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaYou have sung a song in the film Chitra. How was the experience? Are you a trained singer?

Pujarini Ghosh– Yes I have. There is this romantic number sung beautifully by Somlata and Rupankar da. I sang the reprised version of the same. Yes I am a trained singer. I started singing at a very tender age, but this was the first time that I recorded a song in the studio. It was challenging and it was a wonderful experience! I had super-fun recording the song with some lovely people providing the much needed support.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWould you consider singing along with acting (just like Priyanka Chopra) in future?

Pujarini Ghosh– (Laughs out loud) Yes may be someday, you never know. Acting is my first love and it will always be my passion. Well singing can be a bonus on my CV. But it’s too early to predict such things. As of now I just want people to like my performance and accept me more than anything else.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaDo you have any other film projects in hand?

Pujarini Ghosh– Yes! Talks are on. Hopefully one of them will be going on floors soon after the release of my first. But I can’t disclose things right now due to some professional reasons.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat are the kinds of films that you will like to do in future? Do you have any dream role?

Pujarini Ghosh– I want every director to cast me because I definitely want to work with everyone! Every filmmaker has his or her own style and being an actor I love experimenting. I want to try my hands on everything given a chance. I feel it’s important to face the challenge for what it is and have your convictions together. So I am up for challenging roles.

My dream roles are Kangna Ranaut’s character in Queen, Kate Winslet’s in Sense and Sensibility, Rani Mujherjee’s in Black and Kareena Kapoor’s in Jab We Met, just to name a few!

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaDo you idolize any actor/ actress in acting?

Pujaini Ghosh– There are so many fantastic actors! Tom Hanks, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Rabi Ghosh, Smita Patil, Irfaan Khan, Nawazuddin, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaWhat are your hobbies?

Pujarini Ghosh– I am a film buff! I have a huge collection of movies. I love watching films. My other hobbies include painting, writing, I am heavily into music so yes that’s one of course. I love going for long drives, travelling to different places and reading anything I get my hands on.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana BangalianaIf not an actress, what would have been Pujarini’s career choice?

Pujarini Ghosh– May be a pilot! My grandfather was a flying officer in the Indian Air Force. I would be so fascinated listening to his stories and experiences that I could see myself flying an aircraft in my dreams. And if not a pilot then definitely a Chartered Accountant!

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana– Clichéd though, cannot help but ask; where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Pujarini Ghosh– Too early to say! I am just two films old. I want to bag at least some 20 films right now! But yes, I definitely want to see myself as a very successful actor. Now let’s see what the future has in store for me!

This young and dynamic actress definitely comes with a lot of energy and passion for good work and we sincerely hope that Pujarini Ghosh shines bright in the Tinsel Town. Team Sholoana Bangaliana wishes the Young actress the Very Best!!

Buno Haansh Movie Review, Poster, Trailer; Director Anirudhha Roy Chowdhury’s Smart Act

Buno-Haansh-Movie-ReviewWhich individual in his normal state of mind has ever been able to divert attention from the lure of money? The influence of money becomes even more poignant when you hail from financially distressed family and have a long list of financial issues to address. New Bengali film Bunohaansh directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury deals exactly with these issues.

Based on a story of the same name by writer Samaresh Majumdar, Bunohaansh is the story of Amol who hails from a lower middle class family. He works as security personnel at a shopping mall and with the meager salary that he gets, tries to make both ends meet. He meets his friend Robin who introduces him to Madam and right after meeting her he gets the first taste of fast and easy money. Slowly he is drawn into the dark dungeons of smuggling. From there on begins his chase with Rijula. What happens next? Is Amol able to free himself from the dark world or does he go further down into the quagmire of crime?

Anirudhha Roy Chowdhury has stayed true to the original story written by Samaresh Majumdar. When compared with his other films, Bunohaansh has debatable as well as well portrayed parts in equal number. The director could have taken a few liberties in the presentation of the film and some of the characters, as without that, more often than not the scale keeps tipping towards the debatable side. Amol’s character as the innocent, man who gets trapped in the dark underworld could have been presented more realistically. I understand that the director wanted to stay true to the story but such innocence as shown in Amol is interchangeably called stupidity in today’s world. Amol may be a simple guy but can anyone really be that simple so as not to even understand what the job is all about before taking it up? Agreed, there is a financial crisis in his family but still any rational individual will think twice before jumping into uncertainty.

Secondly the chase sequences become a bit too fast in the film. Rijula and Amol’s run from the hands of the don could have been paced a little slow so as to involve the audience more in their plight. The chase sequences often become a bit too hurried.

Thirdly the characterization of the two female dons in the film namely Adrija aka Adi and Madam also seemed a bit too carelessly planned. A bit of shrewdness and aggressiveness on the part of the two female dons could have been helped in making the characters little more convincing. They are way too polished and refined to be at the helm of the mafia.

The friendship bordering on love between Amol and Sohag also looked half brewed. Sohag suffers from a disease which has made her confined to a wheelchair. It would have been better had the director mentioned at some point about her disease and how she became confined to the chair. Apart from a song and a few shots, Sohag and Amol’s love story is not explored much-which will surely leave the audience wanting for more.

Music by Shantanu Moitra is a treat for the ears. Zindagi aptly justifies the wild goose chase theme of the movie. Eseche raat or Bela boe jaai will stay with you for days together.

The film has a huge star cast and the director must be given a few appreciative pats on the back for efficiently handling them. Dev in his de-glam look is a welcome break from his usual glamorous avatar. He plays out his part well. The director though, has played smart and given him less dialogues which has probably helped people in focusing more on the looks than the real act. Sohag Sen with her “Bangal” diction is impressive. Sudipta as Amol’s brother’s wife also does a wonderful job with her part. As the harried housewife who has to maintain the household and also curb her desire to become a mother due to financial crisis is engaging. MoonMoon Sen as Madam is good but she is a bit too sophisticated and polished for a don. A little bit of tacky aggression could have worked wonders for her. The same is the case with Gargi Roy Chowdhury who plays Adrija. Shrabanti as Sohag is good in her limited screen time. Tanusree as Rijula also does a good job with her role.

Bunohaansh is a film with which Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has gone beyond his usual domain of film making. The film maker must be credited for this. However as the audience who have watched his earlier films like Aparajito Tumi or Antaheen, Bunohaansh will be hailed as a modest effort.

Rating- 3/5
