Special Screening of Reshmi Mitra’s New Film Hothat Dekha at Nandan

The special screening of the Bengali film Hothat Dekha took place recently in the august presence of director Reshmi Mitra, J. S. Himi and other eminent dignitaries.

The story and screenplay of this Bengali film has been created with essence from Rabindranath Tagore’s poem Hothat Dekha. Speaking about the film, Reshmi Mitra said “Films based on literary pieces have reduced considerably. With this film, I wanted to give the audience such a film. When I was asked to do this collaborative project with Bangladesh, this is the first story which came to my mind”.

Debasree Roy, Deep, Shankar Chakraborty, Ilias Kanchan, Tulika Basu and others will be seen in important roles in this film. The music has been composed by Raja Narayan Deb.

The film Hothat Dekha has also been screened at the recently held 22nd Kolkata International Film festival.

Singer Sahana Bajpaie’s Solo Folk Album Mon Bandhibi Kemone Released

Due to the versatility of her voice, singer Sahana Bajpaie is equally popular among music enthusiasts in Bangladesh and West Bengal for making Rabindra Sangeet popular among urban youth in the mid-2000s. She released her solo folk album Mon Bandhibi Kemone recently.

The album was released under the banner of Hindustan Records Inreco and has 8 songs of Lalon, Shah Abdul Karim and Bhoba Pagla. Rabiul Islam and Agami TV (Austin Texas, USA) have produced the folk album. Samantak Sinha and Satyaki Banerjee have arranged music for the album.

When asked how she was inspired to venture into folk music she said “I was learning from the Bauls in Shantiniketan. I was also a lead singer of a folk fusion band. My interest in folk songs continued and I sang them at concerts. This is root music and I feel great energy when I sing these songs”.

1st Bengal International Short Film Festival in Kolkata; Huge Response From Short Film Makers

The 1st Bengal International Short Film Festival took place from 7th to 11th September at Rotary Sadan. Organized by Bengal Film and Television Chamber of Commerce, the festival was inaugurated by ace Tollywood actress Rituparna Sengupta.

Apart from various award winning Bengali short films, many short films from Bangladesh, Germany, Italy and Israel have also enriched the festival during this period.

The closing event saw the presence of Debasish Kumar, Mayor-in-Council, Kolkata who gave away the prizes to the winners in various categories like Best director, Best film, Best actor, Best actress and so on. A performance by physically-challenged children troupe named Anwesha also took place on the closing day of this short film festival.

The organizers promised that they will again be back with the short film festival the next year as the response this time has been extremely encouraging!!

Third Edition of Root Music Festival Sahaj Parav Begins in Kolkata; Three Days Musical Extravaganza For the Music Lovers

The third edition of Sahaj Parav -the root music festival is back in the city. Brought to you by Lopamudra Productions and Dohar the festival received enormous support and fabulous response heartening the organisers to move ahead.

Sahaj Parav is an urge to go back to the rich cultural diversity of our nation. It is a call to return to our roots and invest in our future. Powerful performance of Kabir bhajan by Subha Mudgal, Santoor by Shiv Kumar Sharma and Wadali Brothers who would be performing for the first time in Kolkata are some of the important performers at the third edition of this root music festival.  Dhak-dhol, Ron Pa, Sree Khol Badya, Bihu, Chou, Baul, Kathakali, Bohurupi, Saontaali, Raibeshe will also be there to transport the people to the roots.

This year Sahaj Parab would celebrate the birth centenary year of Baul Saah Abdul Karim. Performers like Jamal Uddin Hassan Banna, Anima Mukti Gomes, Sejuti Dey and others from Bangladesh will also be taking part in this festival. Music lovers will also see Maruni Dance (Darjeeling) and Shoshan Nrito too.

Book Launch of India Conquered; Actor Barun Chanda Present at the Event

The book launch of India Conquered took place at Oxford Bookstore in the august presence of actor Barun Chanda, writer Jon Wilson, Anjum Katyal and others.

The book India Conquered shows how many of the institutions that shaped twentieth century India, Bangladesh and Pakistan were built in response to the British power. The result is an engaging story important for any individual who wants to understand the history of the empires and the origins of the contemporary South Asian society. The book is a nuanced novel which gives insights on the infirmities of the British Raj which were otherwise considered to be regal and sovereign.

The writer read important passages of the book, following which a discussion took place at the same event.
