Leto Theatre Workshop Organized in Kolkata; An Effort to Revive the Dying Art Forms

West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts Rabindra Bharati University collaborated to start the seven daylong work shop in almost extinct folk theatre form of West Bengal named Leto. The workshop was inaugurated in the presence of  Prof Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhuri, Chairman, West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts and Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, Prof Barun Chakraborty, Dr. Tarun Pradhan and Leto performers Harakumar Gupta and Adhir Mondal.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof Barun Chakraborty said “Folk theatre evolved much before the advent of films and television. They were the most prominent mass media medium available for the common people. Men enacted the role of females in such theatre form. They were called sakhis and the child artists in such plays were referred to as bengachis. The folk theatre form was initially called netos which later became leto later on. According to Sukumar Sen, an eminent scholar this kind of folk theatre developed much before the birth of Christ. Song, dance and drama form a major part of the Leto Theater form”.

Bankura, Birbhum, Hooghly, Nadia, Midnapur and Mushidabad were some of the places where leto had a rich tradition. Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad were some of the places where the concentration of the leto theatre form in later times.

Hara Kumar Gupta and Adhir Mondal performed some leto performances for the assembled audience present at the workshop.

The workshop will continue till the 14th of September. The workshop will take place daily between 11 am to 5 pm.
