New Bengali Film Belaseshe Review; A Film that Unveils the Masked Truths of Life and Relationships

“I want a divorce from your mother” said Biswanath Mazumdar to his awestruck family consisting of three daughters, son and their respective beaus. After a wedding which lasted for forty nine years, why did the septuagenarian couple decided to opt for a divorce. This is the basic question which is being highlighted in the recently released film Belaseshe.

Director duo Nandita Roy- Shiboprasad Mukherjee who are known for making films which touch both the brain and the heart strikes gold again with this film. Their last release, Kolkata Bengali film Ramdhanu raised questions on the education structure of the country and with the film Belaseshe the director duo treads on the emotional rediscovery of marriages in our country.

The film’s content is so hard hitting that many seated beside me even reacted with “Ei boyeshe divorce?” (A divorce at such an old age?). The director duo must be congratulated for actually holding up a mirror to the recent status of marriages in the society with the film. From the moment Biswanath Mazumdar speaks those words, the film gains momentum and becomes poignant with realization on life and relationships. The director duo does not preach or impart free advices. They simply showcase life as it is. That is the beauty of this film. The storyline is simple and this helps in highlighting the latent realizations that the characters have in the course of the story. Another thing worth highlighting is that the content of the film is very relatable. The events that take the film forward are such that one will be able to identify with them.

The camera work has been done well and the music department also fared well in giving the film the right feeling throughout. The apt placing of the songs and the efficient background score is much to be thanked for the overall appeal of the film.

Acting is another prized possession of the film after the engaging concept. Soumitra Chatterjee and Swatilekha Sengupta shine as Biswanath and Aarti. Their onscreen chemistry is just fantastic and that age old finesse takes their performance to the next level and the veterans prove yet again that no gap is long enough to ignite the spark on screen if there is enough talent (The actors shared screen space after thirty years in Belaseshe).

Rituparna Sengupta, Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee, Indrani Dutta, Monami Ghosh, Barun Chanda, Anindya Chatterjee, Sohini Sengupta, Sohag Sen all have been perfectly cast and they have done their job with the utmost perfection. Kharaj Mukherjee and Aparajita Auddy however have the funny lines in the film and they delivered them with gusto. Even the child actors in the film are a perfect match to the seasoned actors.

Belaseshe is one film which will make you think and rethink about the way you behave with your partner. Whether the person has become just a daily habit or does the person still have some place in your lives is the basic question which you will ponder over after watching this New Bengali film.

A worthy entertaining eye opener that must not be missed!!
