Interview:Actor Anshu Bach On His Second Innings in Tollywood (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Anshu-Bach-Interview

Many will remember the child actor who mesmerized everyone with his acting in films like Wanted, Nater Guru, Bandhan and so on. Master Anshu caught the eyes of director Haranath Chakraborty who found a similarity between his face and Jeet’s face. And lo!! He got his break in Tollywood films. After acting in many films, he took a break from films. His latest release is English vs English. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the young and talented actor in an exclusive chat. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- A very obvious question, what were you doing during the time you took the break?

Anshu Bach- I took the break so that I could finish my education. I am pursuing Communicative English from Ashutosh College. I also wanted to give the audience a break so that the earlier image of mine could be erased and I could come back in a new way. Hence the much needed break.

Anshu-Bach-interview

So did you also learn anything to enhance the acting skills?

Anshu Bach- Look there is not much good institutions here to enhance them. But in this time, I have learnt driving, horse riding so that I can utilize them in the films later on.

How did English vs English happen?

Anshu Bach- I am lucky even in my second innings too!! The DOP of the film was my senior in college. He suggested my name to the director of the film. I got a call in the middle of the night asking me to go and meet them. I thought it was a joke initially. Then I understood that it is true. I went and saw that the song recording was taking place. I realized that this is not something funny. And this is how I bagged the role.

Anshu-Bach-English-vs-English

You have worked with many eminent directors before. So do you have a wish list of film makers with whom you want to work now?

Anshu Bach- I want to work with anyone who wants me to do a role suiting me. I have no such wish list. I have been extremely lucky to have got the chance to have worked with such great people before.

Any dream role??

Anshu Bach-No, I do not have any dream role. As actors we are lucky that we can become so many individuals in one life. We can be a doctor, engineer, teacher, car mechanic and so on. I do not want to limit myself. I want to experiment. Hence positive or negative characters portrayal is all welcome.

You have worked with Dev, Jeet, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Koel Mullick and many other eminent actors. How was the work experience?

Anshu Bach- When I worked with them then, I was not even aware of their popularity. They treated me with so much love. It is now that I understand their importance. I was only seven when I first began and so you can understand that it was not easy for me to grasp these.

Anshu-Bach-Exclusive-Interview

So have you received any film offers yet?

Anshu Bach- No, I have not yet received any offers. But the review that I have got of the film is positive. The ball is now in the court of the directors. Let’s see what they feel about my acting.

You do not have any film connection. Have you ever felt any problem due to this?

Anshu Bach- This has never caused any trouble for me. I have always felt that if I work hard, my work will get noticed and appreciated. I am always ready to give in my 100 percent.

We hope that Anshu shines again in his second innings in Tollywood. Best of luck!!

Interview: Actress Kyra Dutt on Playing Albina Ahmed in Srijit Mukherji’s Zulfiqar (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Kyra-Dutt-interview

She made her presence felt in Bollywood with director Madhur Bhandarkar’s  film Calendar Girls. With the upcoming Bengali movie Zulfiqar, she will be debuting in Bengali movies. Kyra Dutt who promised herself that she will do a Bengali film finally kept the promise that she made to herself. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged the actress in an exclusive conversation about her role in her debut film.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- So you finally kept the promise that you made to yourself?

Kyra Dutt- Yeah!! I am so happy that I could finally do a Bengali movie. Bagging the role in a film like Zulfiqar has been a great opportunity for me. Making a debut under the guidance of a director like Srijit Mukherji and with such a dream cast consisting of Dev, Paoli Dam, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Nusrat Jahan and others- what can I wish more for?

Kyra-Dutt-Zulfiqar

Can you throw some light on the character you play in the film?

Kyra Dutt- I play a Muslim girl Albina Ahmed. In Julius Caesar she is Octavia, Caesar’s niece. Bumba da plays the role of Caesar in Zulfiqar. I won’t reveal about the character as most of the people who have read the play know about Octavia. For those who are not aware of the character, one can either go though the play or simply wait for the film to release. I am excited!!

How has the journey been from Calendar Girls to Zulfiqar?

Kyra Dutt- Well, it has been great. Most people have been thinking of me in glamorous roles. But Srijit Mukherji was the first person to think of me in this de-glam look. He expects so much of you that you actually work hard to live up to his expectations. I hope I have been able to do that in the film. This is my first Bengali film and my Bengali has an accent. So I was worried. But we all have put in our best efforts and we hope that the people will like it.

Kyra-Dutt-Interview

Puja is just around the corner and you film will also be releasing. This is like a double treat for you!!

Kyra Dutt- Indeed!! I have not been in Kolkata during Pujas for many years. So this is like a treat to me. No one is leaving me this time. I will be staying here and my film is releasing, so it will be a great Puja for me.

How was Srijit Mukherji as a director?

Kyra Dutt- I have been a fan of his movies. The first Bengali film that I saw was his film Autograph. I was bowled over by the film. It is then that I realized that such great films are made in Kolkata. He is a visionary which is proved by the films that he makes. It is also proved by the fact that he chose me in that de-glam role.

How did you bag the role?

Kyra Dutt- I guess it was plain luck that I got this role. I had just completed Calendar Girls when I got the call to feature in this film. I did not listen to the script before agreeing. I agreed because it is a Srijit Mukherji film and I wanted to work with him.

We hope Kyra’s debut in Bengali films turns out to be a great success for the young model turned actress!!

Interview: Actor Yash Dasgupta on his Debut Bengali Film Gangster (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Yash-Dasgupta-interview

Remember Aranya Sinha Roy of Star Jalsha serial Bojhena se Bojhena? Good news for his fans. Actor Yash Dasgupta who played the role of Aranya will be seen as Guru in the upcoming Bengali film Gangster. Sholoana Bangaliana caught up with the actor in an exclusive interview. Excerpts…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- What made you say “yes” to the role of Guru in the film Gangster?

Yash Dasgupta- I was with the film from the time the script was being written down. The person who wrote the story is my friend. It is not that I have helped in the concept or anything. But I had belief in the story. I always believe that if I like the story in which I am acting, then I can expect that the audience will love it. Or else how can I expect a story which I had no faith in to be loved and appreciated by the audience? This story touched my heart and hence I believe this will touch the hearts of the audience too.

Yash-Dasgupta-Gangster

You are making your debut in Birsa Dasgupta’s film. How was the experience of working with him?

Yash Dasgupta- I believe that this is Birsa’s best work till date as a director. He has gone beyond his capabilities in the film. The script has been so wonderfully utilized that I think that many seated in the hall will have tears in their eyes. The film Gangster is not simply a story of a gangster of about his love. It is also about redefining love.

Mimi and your chemistry are much talked about. So how was it sharing screen space with her?

Yash Dasgupta- To be very frank, I am glad she was part of the film. Otherwise I and Birsa are very serious and reserved individuals. The film would have been shot in utter seriousness. It is she who in between shots did some pranks and gave us comic relief. She is however a talented actress. Her fans will be amazed to see her acting skills in the film. If I was a girl, I would have loved to get the role that she acted in. She is the one to watch out for.

Yash-Dasgupta-interview

Bengali film songs are shot abroad. But you have shot the entire film abroad. How was the shooting experience?

Yash Dasgupta- It was a wonderful experience. The weather was so good that we had no trouble shooting the film. Not only in Istanbul, but we have shot the film at various places in Turkey. Since the country is located at the middle of the Earth, the days are long and sunset would happen at 9 o’ clock. This meant we got long hours of sunlight and we could shoot to our heart’s content. Though we may not have gone on sightseeing, the schedule was such that we shot at beautiful locations and made the most of the stay.

We often send the shot portions for color corrections to the DI. But in this case we had to send it so that the color could be dimmed a little as the real color was so unnatural. We also had long adda sessions as no one had the hurry to go back home.

Will we get to see you again on television?

Yash Dasgupta- Television is my backbone. Whatever little I have become is because of television. If I get something good, I will do television again. When there are integration programs for the film on television, I feel like I have come back home.

You are reserved in your real life and so is Aranya and so is Guru. Was the decision to take up such characters entirely coincidental or did you intentionally pick them up as you will be relate with them easily?

Yash Dasgupta- (laughs) It is purely coincidental that I have done characters which are reserved just like me. Aranya loved Pakhi in a different way and Guru’s way of expressing love is different. But yes, I like characters which speak lesser words and express more through their eyes. But I also did Radhe in the serial which was completely different from me. As an actor I have to keep on pushing myself and doing different roles. For playing Guru, I had to learn Muay-Thai. I have tried to present myself in a new way in front of the audience. I just hope that they like me.

Wishing the actor all the best for his debut Bengali film Gangster!!

Interview: Veteran Actor Victor Banerjee on Playing Rabindranath Tagore in Indo-Argentina Film Thinking of Him

Actor-Victor-Banerjee

Veteran actor Victor Banerjee will be enacting as Rabindranath Tagore in the upcoming film Thinking of Him which is an Indo-Argentina collaborative project. Directed by Pablo Caesar, the film is going to start shooting soon. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the versatile actor about his role in the film. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You will be playing the role of Rabindranath Tagore in the film. How are you preparing yourself for the role?

Victor Banerjee- Rabindranath Tagore will be the same in the film- the same white beard, the same dress, the same mannerisms. What will be different is the way the person will be portrayed. This is not the way we think of him- as the Bard. But this is the way the people of Argentina see him as. Hence what I will have to do most importantly is to understand their ideas about Tagore and how they perceive him.

In West Bengal, we all cannot spend a day without Tagore. But see the rest of India is oblivious about him. It is also to be noted that despite this, he is so popular in a country located so far away even after so many years.

I have read the letters of Tagore so as to understand the relation that he had with Victoria Ocampo.

Victor-Banerjee-interview

What made you say yes to this film? Was it the fact that you have been interested in Argentina’s literature and films?

Victor Banerjee- Who will want to miss the chance to play Tagore on screen? Not me!! Apart from that fact, yes, I have been much impressed with the way these people make films or write books. They are inhibition-less. What they feel is right, they will write about it. They do not think much about whether the work will be accepted or not. They have this courage which is so amazing. Russians also have this courage to do and say things they believe in. Pablo wrote a book in which he mentioned that humans were from other planets and they were initially amphibians. This is indeed amazing you see!!

Victor-Banerjee-interview

People outside India are taking so much interest in Tagore’s way of education. But that has not become so popular in India. Why do you think is the case in India?

Victor Banerjee– Despite the fact that we are independent, we are still carrying on with the British system of education. The committing to memory and vomiting it on the paper continues even now. The people of Argentina and other countries have understood the importance of education system advocated by Tagore and hence they are so interested about him. Let’s see when the people in our country realize that.

The shooting of the film will be done in Shantiniketan, Argentina and France. We wish the ace actor Victor Banerjee all the best for portraying the Bard on screen!!

Interview- Singer Lopamudra Mitra on 25 Years of Her Musical Journey (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Lopamudra-Mitra-interview

She has been mesmerizing with her voice for the past twenty five years. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the versatile singer Lopamudra Mitra at her home for a candid conversation about her musical journey so far. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You have completed twenty five years in the music industry. How does it feel?

Lopamudra Mitra- To be very frank, I was not aware that I have actually completed twenty five years. I like doing a musical event after every five years with the musicians I like and I sing the songs that I love at the event. This feels great actually. I had not thought that I will be actually completing twenty five years in the industry. I also had not also thought that my song Benimadhob will be heard more than once by the audience. Leave aside for twenty five years.

What will be the attractions in this year’s show?

Lopamudra Mitra- Thirteen musicians will be playing different musical instruments at the show. Joy will also be performing. Violins, guitars and many other instruments will be there. This has always been a latent wish of mine to sing with so many musical instruments. Hence this is a dream come true.

Lopamudra-Mitra-interview

When did you start singing?

Lopamudra Mitra- I began singing from a very small age. Arun Bhaduri, Rita Ray are some of my teachers who have guided me immensely. My inspiration was Samir Chattopadhyay. He had a group theatre and my singing began from there. It is from then that I developed a different singing style which is now appreciated so much by the people.

Since this dream is coming true, what other dreams are yet to be fulfilled by you?

Lopamudra Mitra- I will say that I have fulfilled more of my dreams than I thought I would be actually able to do. I will like to work on the national level and reach out to a wider audience in the language that they understand. I will also like to take Bengali to national and even international audience.

Have you thought of any collaborating with any artists?

Lopamudra Mitra- I have not thought about that till now. But yes, I will have to make plans about it.

Many Bengali singers are singing in Bollywood. Have you ever tried your luck or do you have the interest of singing in Bollywood?

Lopamudra Mitra- If I get a call from a music director asking me to sing a song, I will be giving it a try. But otherwise, it is not in my nature to go asking for giving me chances. I will rather focus on my work that I am doing rather than do this.

Which one do you prefer- Bengali film songs or Bengali album songs?

Lopamudra Mitra- I will be opting for the album songs. The popularity of the film songs have happened in the last few years. Previously the audiences used to listen to the Bengali album songs. Now the media is giving enough support and this is helping the artists working in the films.

Lopamudra-Mitra-interview

What are your next film projects?

Lopamudra Mitra- The funny thing is I have not been given much chance to sing in Bengali films. I have recently recorded a song for Joy (Sarkar) in which he is composing the music and I have also sang for a Raja Sen movie. The fact is I have not being given opportunities to sing in Bengali films. I sang in Hemlock Society a few years ago. It did not do that well. So I focus mainly on basic albums. I think about them and I work tirelessly on them.

So what are your next albums?

Lopamudra Mitra- Four songs are ready. Srijato and Srikanto will be working on the project along with me.

How is the experience of working with Joy Sarkar?

Lopamudra Mitra- Since he is my husband, there is a good comfort level between us. We are both musically attached and this helps us very much when we work together. I enjoy working with him.

Rabindranath Tagore wrote so many songs yet artists perform a select few of his songs. What is the reason for this kind of selection?

Lopamudra Mitra- See, there is an entertainment element attached when we sing songs on stage. People like to listen only to hit and popular songs. Tagore has both hit songs and not so hit songs. There are many artists who can sing all the songs of Tagore but performing them on stage is always not a good idea. Hence this picking up of the common songs for performing on stage!!

What tip/advice will you like to give to upcoming young singers?

Lopmudra Mitra– I believe the youngsters are trying to gain popularity soon. But that is not a good idea. The struggle for existence is becoming strict daily. Hence the person must have the required depth so as to survive in this world. Or else the artist will be facing hardships. Most youngsters have knowledge on the superficial level.

Singer-Lopamudra-Mitra

There is a huge number of reality shows going on in different channels. How far do you think these shows help the upcoming artists?

Lopamudra Mitra- The winner of such a reality show faces a huge challenge after winning the show. This is simply because the person has to make a name next and make his presence felt. Before he could have sang some famous singer’s songs and gained prominence. And after the win he will be called to many places to perform songs. But after the one year period is over, he will face the real struggle. His songs in his own voice need to make a mark or he will be lost. For example, Arijit Singh did not win the reality show Fame Gurukul. He had to struggle a lot before he actually became so popular. Hence struggling cannot be avoided. Struggling without expectation is comparatively easy than struggling with so much expectations of the audience.

Do you have any plans of opening up a singing school?

Lopamudra Mitra- No, ways!! If someone wants to take some tips, I will rather give them advice on how to become a good human being. That is also extremely important!!

You are a favorite singer of many people. So who are your favorite singers?

Lopamudra Mitra- Kishore Kumar and Geeta Dutt are my favorite singers.

Like any other food loving Bengali, what are your favorite dishes?

Lopamudra Mitra- Chinese, Continental and yes I love to gorge on Biryanis.

What do you do in your free time?

Lopamudra Mitra- I go to different places. Earlier I used to read books. But now I go on searching for many things on the internet. I will have to leave this habit soon as this is very addictive.

Had you not become a singer, what would you have become?

Lopemudra Mitra- (Thinks for a moment) I would have become a very bad housewife. Home making is a huge responsibility. Since I will not be able to become the traditionally responsible housewife, Joy and I do not have a child.

The call for her rehearsal came and we had to bid adieu to the versatile singer. We hope she continues to sing and mesmerize her with her soulful voice!!
