Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Devdas has been given a female perspective in debut director Rick Basu’s film. Titled Devi, the film is a tribute to the ace director Satyajit Ray. However, the director has already cleared the fact that this has nothing to do with the film made by the veteran director.
The film deconstructs Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Devdas, and the genders of the main characters have been reversed. The story is based in the 21st century and hence some changes have been made. This has been done so as to make the film realistic as a lot of changes have happened in the man-woman relationship in modern times.
Paoli plays Devdas’s female avatar, Devi Banerjee, who is addicted to drugs. Despite being a Bengali film, many dialogues are in English. There are two looks of Paoli in the film. The first is the casual look where she will be wearing skirts and kurtas. The second look has dreadlocks and the actress has an altogether different look. The film will begin with Paoli being chased by thirty policemen in cars. The story will be revealed in flashback.
The film has Paoli, Shubh Mukherjee, Elena Kazan and Shataf Figar in pivotal roles. About 70% of the film will be shot in Pattaya and the rest in Kolkata. Savvy is composing the music and an additional track by Abhishek Chowdhury is also in the film.
