Tollywood Superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee who has two back to back releases in the form of Gautam Ghose’s Sankhachil and Nandita Roy- Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s Praktan is all set to wow the audiences with his stellar performances. While Sankhachil has been bestowed with the Best Bengali Film award at the National Film Award ceremony, the actor is much more in news for his pairing with ace actress Rituparna Sengupta after a span of fifteen long years. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actor at the trailer launch of this film. Read on to find what Bumba da had to say…
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- The trailer launch is done. So what do you have to say about the trailer?
Prosenjit Chatterjee- I mean it looks so good. The beauty of the city has been captured so well. Added to that is the recitation of Tagore’s Hatath Dekha by Soumitra Chatterjee. It lends a whole new dimension to the trailer. Let’s see how my fans and well wishers react to the trailer of this film.
So can you tell us something about the character that you play in Praktan?
Prosenjit Chatterjee- Ujaan is a guide who takes foreigners and tourists from other states out for heritage walks. Films revolving guides have been made in both Bollywood and Tollywood. But I was not aware about this profession before. All the credit goes to Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee for doing such an extensive research on them.
You have a penchant for picking up challenging roles, what attracted you to do this character?
Prosenjit Chatterjee- (laughs) The character of Ujaan attracted me because I was not aware of these people who actually spend time to uphold the heritage of the city. I was aware of the history of the city to some extent. But it was during the shoot of this film, that I have become more aware of the city’s history in details. Kolkata is a fascinating city and even we the citizens of this city are not aware of many issues. But these individuals who take people out for such heritage walks actually do a noble job of upholding the city in front of the tourists who come here.
One thing that struck me about these individuals was that they do not earn much. However, they still do this job out of their love for the city. In the film, the profession has not been looked down upon. Instead the director duo had tried and showcased their contribution in upholding the pride of the city to the tourists.
Bumba da, you are even experimenting with your looks. Please throw some light on your look in this film!!
Prosenjit Chatterjee- Experimenting is necessary or else the audiences will grow tired of watching me (laughs out loud). There are two looks in the film. I have been told to do two looks in the film- one will be for the past and one will be for the present. I have thought about it and then done the look. Ritu and I have done many good films together. But Utsab is one of my favorites. The look in that film also is one of my favorites. Hence I have gone back to that look for this film too. Let’s see how the audiences react to my experimentation.
Nostalgia is high with this film. You are working with Aparajita Auddy after seventeen years and with Rituparna Sengupta after fifteen years. What do you have to say about this?
Prosenjit Chatterjee- That is correct. Apa is a powerful and wonderful actress. We worked long before and she has evolved much as an actress from the last time I acted alongside her. The best thing that has happened to Indian cinema is that slowly and gradually the concept of the conventional hero and heroine is fading away. This is giving scope to powerful actresses like Aparajita who can prove their mettle too. Hence, we will be seeing her in a very important role in Praktan.
As for Ritu, it is actually wonderful to work with her. We share a rapport that is hard to describe. When we were going to give the first shot on day one of the shooting, the director duo asked us to do a less intense shot as we are working after so many years. The funny part is we did about thirty scenes on the first day itself. I will not boast but it did not feel as if we were working after so many years. Such is the bonding!!
The most evident question- your expectations from the film..!!
Prosenjit Chatterjee- I know our fans have a lot of expectations from us and also from the director duo. We have all given our level best. Now it is up to them to come to the halls and give as much love as they can to this film as they gave for the other films of Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee.
We are all equally excited to watch this hit pair again on screen. However, we will have to wait till 27th May to see this magic unfold on screen.
