What happens when the charm of a relationships fade over time? The same smile that charmed you may not appear as appealing as it was when you first saw it. Director Sudipta Chattopadhyay’s film Highway deals exactly with these turmoils in the relationships. The music lunch of this upcoming Bengali film took place at STOY in the presence of actress Koel Mullick, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ujjaini, Anupam Roy and Sudipta Chattopadhyay.

“The film has seven songs. Since this is an urban film, the songs have an earthy rustic touch to it. This will appeal more to the listeners. When I heard the script, I could relate easily with it. Hence finding the singers for the songs was not a big deal. The songs in the album are romantic yet peppy and also melodious” said music director Anupam Roy. Silajit, Arijit Singh, Anupam Roy, Tanya Sen, Ujjaini and Prashmita Paul have lent their voices to the songs in the film.
The film Highway is about a couple who despite having a love marriage develop a gap in their relationship. Even after trying for a long time, they fail to bridge this gap. Koel Mullick plays the role of a Bengali girl Sohini Dasgupta while Parambrata plays the role of a non-Bengali guy.
“One of the fondest memories from this film is during the hot sweltering May heat when we shot in Darjeeling for a few days. This was a blessing in disguise for us” said actor Parambrata Chatterjee. The actor had earlier worked with the director many years back when he was nineteen. Parambrata has also shot the promotional music video of the song Protidin for this film.
“Highway has been used as a metaphor. The ups and downs in life and also in the relationships have been highlighted in the film. The film’s USP is the portrayal of real life issue like the tedium in a relationship which has been highlighted with gusto by the director” said actress Koel Mullick.
The film shall be releasing in theaters on 8th of August.
The music launch of the upcoming Bengali film Khasi Kotha took place at Minus 6 Degrees, Swabhumi. The music launch ceremony was graced by Anindita, Prasun Gyne, Raja Narayan Deb, Judhajit Sarkar, Raghav, Zinia and many others.
The film has an interesting premise with a castrated goat talking to a butcher and narrating a story which actually keeps the butcher hooked. “Music in the film is also of much importance as is the story of the film. This is for the first time that I have not done the background score and the music together. Usually I do both the things together in all the films that I have worked on as the music director. The background score has been done by Vikramjit Tuki Banerji in this film. There are four songs in the film. The songs are diverse in their feel. One is a qawali while the first song has an earthy feel to it. Raghav, Dwitipriya, Sukanya, Zinia have lent their voices to the songs in the film” said music director Raja Narayan Deb.
Anindita plays the role of the boxer Salma in this film. “This is indeed a tough role that I had to play. I got less time for the training and within that had to lean some moves and also get the attitude of the boxer correct” said the pretty actress. Prasun Gyne plays the role of Pervez Alam in the film, who is the brother of Salma. He fails to become a boxer himself but he helps his sister to achieve her dreams.
Speaking about the USP of the film director Judhajit Sarkar said “The USP is the story and the narrator, who is a goat. The goat is in the lowest range of the food chain and having him as the narrator raises the interest level of the audiences”.
Subhasish Mukhopadhyay, Biswanath Basu, Biswajit Chakraborty, Silajit, Anindya Banerjee, Mir and Naseeruddin Shah will be seen in important roles in the film.
The film releases on the 30th of May.
What is common between the films “Ek choti si love story”, “A short film about Love” and the recently released Bangla film “Window Connection”? Well if you are still hunting for the answers, let me give you the answer. The three of them have the same premise of a younger guy falling in love with a woman who is elder to him.
New Kolkata Bengali Movie Window Connection is about Rahul who has a disturbed family life. His parents bicker over trivial issues and keep on fighting always. This has a negative impact on the mental well being of Rahul. He hates women and avoids talking with them. His life however changes when Sohini, his neighbor comes in his life. He records her while she is bathing. However he does not use the video in a bad manner. He keeps on stalking her and she catches him red handed. She notices the innocence in his eyes and forgives him. Sohini considers him to be her friend while Rahul falls in love with her. His world comes crashing down when he learns she has a boyfriend, Abir. He tries to harm Abir. Rahul becomes so obsessed that he is ultimately sent to a mental asylum for treatment. Whether he is cured finally from this obsession or not is what the rest of the film is about.
Debutant director R.K. Gupta must be credited for presenting this simple story in such an attractive manner. The narrative is simple and this blends well with the story. The director has aptly justified the title of the New Bengali Movie Window Connection. The fact that the teenager Rahul sees the neighbor through the window and develops a relationship with the neighbor justifies the name of the movie. The climax of the movie comes as a surprise and the loose end it leaves will help in shaping up a sequel to the movie. One minor flaw that I could locate was the fact why will someone keep the door of the verandah open at night? Sohini’s door of the verandah remains open at night. This is not practical.
Music by Anupam Roy is soothing for the ears and blends well with the narrative style of the film. “Bhalobasa Bhalobasa” aptly speaks about the feelings of first love. The other song which stays back with you is “Kagoje mogoje”. This song has the haunting element of a broken heart.
Aryann Bhowmik shines in the film as Rahul. The actor who had earlier played Santu in Director Srijit Mukherji’s Mishawr Rohoshyo has very expertly handled the emotional turbulences of a teenager. His possessiveness and obsession in many of the scenes will remind one of Shah Rukh Khan’s character in the film Darr. Aryann has immense potential and with the right kind of push he will surely shape up as one of those stars whom the Bengali film industry can bank on. Tanushree acts and plays her part as Sohini well. Kanchan Mullick as the cable operator Antu brings comic relief in this film.
Window Connection is a well made film. Though the story may be familiar to many sitting in the audience, the treatment is however different which lends it a different taste. This movie will be a good weekend watch and is worth spending on.

The premiere of the much awaited film Apur Panchali was held at South City Mall Inox on Thursday April 24 and present at the premiere were all the glittering stars of Tollywood.
Director Kaushik Ganguly along with team Venkatesh Films was busy welcoming guests and in between speaking to the media about various aspects of the Apur Panchali journey while the director’s wife Churni Ganguly dressed in a pretty asymmetrical kurta seemed happy chatting up with old friends from the industry.
Parno, who looked her gorgeous self was also seen posing for the ever so eager shutterbugs and answering the innumerable questions that kept flowing in from the journalists. Parno who has already said before that the role she has played in Apur Panchali, though absolutely different from what she is like, is not somebody alien as she has seen such characters around her and spoke on similar lines when questioned about her looks in the movie.
Tollywood’s youngest and cutest couple Gaurav Chakrabarty and Riddhima Ghosh made a pretty picture too. Gaurav who plays Arka in the movie suitably complemented the beautiful lady in pink and took special care in keeping her company.
Though there were way too many pretty faces to capture in their lenses, the shutterbugs went into a clicking frenzy as soon as Director Srijit Mukherjee entered the lounge, dressed in a cool casual red T-shirt and denims . Srijit looked all fresh and re-energized after his long trip to the U.S. and seemed quite happy to be in the company of friends like the SVF top bosses.
Mimi Chakraborty, Tanushree, Sreelekha Mitra and all the other leading ladies of Tollywood were also there to support the Silver Peacock Winning Director and his outstanding team of actors, musicians and technicians.
The premiere show, though started a bit late was definitely a treat to the eyes of all present as the movie is definitely another landmark in the history of Bengali Cinema.
Bengali Audio Music Album launch of upcoming film Bhaarate took place at Star Mark in South City Mall recently and the ceremony was attended by Tollywood Actress Rituparna Sengupta, Arunima Ghosh, Tollywood Hero Rajdeep, director Anindya Ghosh, Music directors Dolan and Mainak and the singers Kinjal, Anwesha and Sukanya.
“The music of this film has been done keeping in mind the need of the sequences. We are grateful to Anindya Ghosh for giving us the opportunity to debut in his film as music directors. He has given us enough space and that has really helped us to showcase our creativity in a larger than life platform” said Dolan. There are four songs in this album and the Bengali song “Cholo dhori ek poloke” has two versions- a happy and a sad one. Along with the music directors, the singers who have lent their voices in the film are also making their debut in this field.
Director Anindya Ghosh is making his debut with this film and the debutant director was visibly happy and nervous at the same time about this new Bengali film. “Rimi (Arunima) and Vikram (Rajdeep) is a married couple. When Rimi’s uncle dies, they are left with an ancestral home. Since this is hard to maintain, they think of renting it out to someone. Many people come but it is only with Tiasha (Rituparna Sengupta) that they gel well. What happens next after the entry of the tenant in their lives is what the film is all about. The film is essentially of the drama genre”, said the director when asked about the storyline of the film.
In a halter neck embroidered black dress, Rituparna surely showed how to look glamorous despite this heat. “The songs have been composed really well. I could not believe at first that Dolan and Mainak were making their debut with this film as the songs are too good” said the actress. For Arunima and Rajdeep, the favorite track from the film is “Ami kotha je jai” sung by Dibyendu.
New Kolkata Bengali Movie Bhaarate is expected to release on April 11.
