Singer Imon Chakraborty will be soon adding another feather to her cap. The ace singer will be seen anchoring the Aakash Aath show Robimaash. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the singer in between shots. Excerpts..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- This is your first stint as an anchor. How are you preparing yourself for the role?
Imon Chakraborty- I have done my graduation and Masters on Tagore. Since, this is my first stint as an anchor, I am putting in a lot of hard work in the process. The personalities whom I will be interviewing in the show include stalwarts like Monomoy, Rupankar Bagchi, Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta, Rezwana Choudhury Bonna and others. I have grown up listening to them and now interviewing them is making me tensed. Hence, I am putting in a lot of effort for sure.
On the other hand this can be also seen as my test also. I can get to check how much I know Tagore. This will be a platform to prove myself. Hence, I am nervous as well as there is an urge to prove my knowledge about the Bard.
How did you get the offer for this role?
Imon Chakraborty- Debjit da called me up one day and said that there is a program on Tagore which is going to start soon and offered me the role. I was in Bangladesh then. I immediately said yes. I was so very happy at having bagged this opportunity to host a show on Tagore.
Having studied about the Bard in such detail, what is your perception of him now?
Imon Chakraborty- Rabindranath Tagore is everything to me. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep he is there with me always. When no one is in the room, I recite poems by looking at the mirror. I will also take the opportunity to acknowledge the fact that had he not been there, many artists like us would not have been able to earn their livelihood. We owe this to him.
A lot of fusion is being done with the songs of Tagore. How far do you think it is justifiable?
Imon Chakraborty- Well, Tagore himself welcomed new changes. I also do not dislike fusion of his songs. He introduced many fusion elements in his songs. He introduced Ragas as well as Western music in his songs. So doing fusion with his songs is nothing new that we are doing now. However, I will like to add that we must know where to stop and draw the line. Improvising too much on his songs is not justifiable.
Since Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday is just around the corner, what are your usual plans for the day?
Imon Chakraborty- Well, if I stay in Kolkata I usually go on doing programs throughout the day. I hardly get the time to eat. I have a huge grievance against Tagore, why was he born during this summer season! (laughs out loud) If I am abroad on the day, I usually have a single program and then I can do what I like throughout the day.
This month the Bengalis also celebrated Poila Baisakh. Do you feel that the spirit of Poila Baisakh has somehow got lost and dominated by the New Year celebrations?
Imon Chakraborty- Yes, there is a certain amount of domination for sure. This is the effect of globalization. I will not say that we have lost our Bangaliana but we have also whole heartedly embraced these trends also. I have fond memories of many programs which I used to watch on Doordarshan on Poila Baisakh.
Since this is your first project as an anchor, what are your expectations from the show?
Imon Chakraborty- Apart from the fact that this is my first stint as an anchor, this is a project which is very dear to my heart. We are all working as a team and this team work will show in the show. Moreover, the audiences will see the real me and I will not be putting on a façade. I hope to connect with the audiences well.
