We all may have heard Baul songs sometime in our lives. But how many of us even have heard the name of Mahajani Songs? This may sound alien and even new but this is a genre of songs which is a part of West Bengal’s art and culture. Mahajani Songs have a history of three hundred years. These songs have a long history in Bengal. Despite steps taken to revive the folk songs of Bengal, no steps have been taken to do anything for the Mahajani Songs. In a bid to increase awareness about this song tradition, the event was organized by the West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

The Mahajani singers whose songs were presented in this three hour long event included Bijoy Sarkar, Haure Gosai, Rashiduddin, Din Sarot and others. Most of them are dead, leaving aside Sadhan Das Bairaggo.
