Tinkle’s Bengali Ghost Series Buchki and The Booligans; Stories With a Touch of Folklore in a Comic Avatar

Buchki-and-The-Booligans

Monsters, fairies and ghosts may make us feel afraid, but they have nevertheless been an essential part of the growing up years of most individuals. Holidays, train journeys without such stories could not be imagined by the kids. Keeping this idea in mind, Tinkle has come up with a new series of these stories with Bengali characters– Buchki and the Booligans – in a comic avatar.

The series is about a young girl and her encounters with the ghostly hooligans of Boodanga aka Booligans! Boodanga is a fictional small town on the crossroads of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.

Buchki-and-The-Booligans

Buchki is an eight-year-old explorer in her head. The truth is she is scared of the dark and of ghosts. She happens to have the talent to see ghosts who are not always nice. They come in various shapes and sizes, from myths and from legends. So, it is a good thing Buchki has her brother, her Dadu and her Didu to help her deal with these Booligans.

The idea behind Buchki came from the need to explore Indian folklore and giving it a classic Tinkle spin. The editor, Rajani Thindiath felt that with this series the kids of today’s times will be exposed to the wonderful world of Indian folktales.

Paroma Bose, the brain behind the series immediately thought of her hometown, Jamshedpur, and its surrounding villages, steeped in the tradition of oral stories. She took inspiration from the many Bengali folktales she had heard and read as a child. The series will first focus on legends and folktales from eastern India and then slowly expand to stories from the rest of India.

The artist of the series, Avik Kumar Maitra, was able to set a traditional Bengali premise for the series, since he is familiar with Bengali folklore.

With this new series, the kids will be exposed to the rich he
