Films on games are nothing new in Bollywood. Lagan, Chak De India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag are some examples of the films made in this genre. Shailesh Varma’s debut Hindi film Badlapur Boys has been made on kabaddi. The director along with the cast Nishan and Pooja Gupta wee in the city for the Kolkata promotions.
The film Badlapur Boys highlights on farmer suicide cases and the remedy to this problem is found out with the help of the game kabaddi. The director also added that the film is not a biopic or a documentary but a full commercial one with action, romance and other entertainment elements. The director who is an ardent fan of the game also played the game when he was in his school and college days. “Many people questioned me why was I trying to make my debut with a film on kabaddi. It is not a popular sport and when I thought of making the film, no leagues were also initiated. However the growing importance of kabaddi and the recently held Pro Kabaddi league has proved that we were walking in the correct direction.
Shailesh Varma, who had written screenplay and dialogue for the Salman Khan starer Veer stayed clear from taking high profile actors as they already have an image which would be difficult to break. While speaking with Sholoana Bangaliana the director also said, “Having new faces was also the demand of the script due to which the selection of our current star cast”.
Kolkata boy Nishan, who plays the lead protagonist in the film highlighted on the fact that shooting in a village in Jaipur was extremely difficult for the cast. “It was hot in the morning and cold in the evening which made it difficult for us to shoot the film. However we all accepted the challenges and moved on ahead with the shoot. Challenges make the shoots interesting” said Nishan. A state level coach was also assigned with the job of training the actors so that their performances look authentic on screen.
Pooja Gupta who plays the role of Manjili in the film was visibly excited to be a part of such a film. The actress had already proved her mettle in many a Bollywood films like Oh My God, Vicky Donor and others. “I play the role of a girl from Allahabad whose father is a journalist by profession. He reports about the kabaddi matches and in between Manjili falls in love with the character played by Nishan”. The look of the actress in the film has also been done accordingly. She will mostly be seen in jeans, kurtis and salwar suits in the film.
The director was full of praises for Nishan who is not only a good actor but a very good human being too. “He would not question twice why I wanted him to run or walk in a particular manner. He is great to work with” said the director.
The director feels that the honesty in the film, the hard work and the topical issues which have been dealt with will help in bringing the audiences to the halls. Moreover films on sports are made less in India due to which people should all the more support this movie and come to the theaters to watch it.
Badlapur Boys is slated for release on the 7th of November.
