Colors Bangla Series Taranath Tantrik Brings Actor Tota Roy Chowdhury Back to Small Screen

Based on eminent Bengali writer Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay’s story, Taranath Tantrik, the new Colors Bangla serial of the same name started airing from 13th June. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the director and the cast in between shots at Belgachia Rajbari.

Taranath Tantrik is a literary character introduced by Bibhutibhusn Bandopadhyay and then popularized by his son Taradas Bandopadhyay. The story book character has been adapted to television while making suitable changes to suit the needs of the story telling. “There are many stories where the suspect narrates the story. But we cannot show it like that on television. Hence we have done slight changes so as to make Taranath important in the story. We also have linked up the stories. One story leads to the other. So you cannot simply leave one story and then see the next episode” said director Soumik Chattopadhyay.

Playing the lead character of Taranath is actor Tota Roy Chowdhury. Speaking at the press meet, the actor said “I never thought that I will be selected for this role. Hats off to the team for actually thinking that I could carry off this role!! There is a sense of adventure in the character. Despite being such a daredevil character, he gets scolded by his wife at home. In short, he may be the person to fight the evil powers, but he is the typical Bengali husband and father at home”.

Sougata Bannerji will be seen as Bibhuti in the serial. “I am very greedy for enacting characters with a literary background. I did the role of Ajit, Byomkesh Bakshi’s assistant in the television series. That was a long cherished dream. And now to become the assistant and the voice of scientific reason for Taranath is a great role for me” said the actor.

Poulomi Basu plays the role of Taranath’s wife Promila. “She is the typical housewife. She supports her husband and takes care of the family. However she was afraid when danger lurks for Taranath” said actress Poulomi Basu.

Singer Jojo will be seen playing the role of Matu Pagli in the serial. “I have a unique look as you can see. I am the personification of positive powers and it is I who give the powers to Taranath. She also provides him with the knowledge about the art of Tantra. However she does not age” said Jojo with a wink.

Subhashish Mukherjee will be seen in the role of Kapalik, the strongest representation of evil in the series. Betal, a fierce spirit captured by Kapalik will be essayed by actress Rupa Bhattacharya.

The script of Taranath Tantrik is by Soukarya Ghoshal while the dialogues are by Dipanjan Chandra. The camera is by Alok Maity.

The director also added that Taranath Tantrik is not a serial but a series.

Taranath Tantrik is shown on Colors Bangla at 8pm from Monday to Saturday. Do not miss it!!

Interview- Actor Tota Roy Chowdhury on Playing Taranath Tantrik in the Colors Bangla Serial, Taranath Tantrik (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Bengali actor Tota Roy Chowdhury who is returning to the small screen after a span of seven long years will be seen enacting the role of Taranath Tantrik in the Colors Bangla serial. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actor in between shoots. Excerpts ..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- So you are again returning to the small screen again. What made you say yes to this role of Taranath Tantrik?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- My first love is and has always been films. So if I have to say yes to a project on television, it has to be immensely interesting and captivating. The role that I have been offered of Taranath is immensely interesting. I did not want to do saas-bahu dramas. So when I was offered the role, I was initially surprised because I myself did not think that I could suit the role. However my director Soumik Chattopadhyay persisted and believed in me. Hope the audience finds me apt in this role.

Tell us about Taranath, the character you play in the upcoming serial.

Tota Roy Chowdhury- Taranath Tantrik is a common Bengali man whom you will meet every other day. He has a family consisting of his wife Promila and daughter Chari. He however is blessed with supernatural powers with the help of which he fights with the evil powers. Though he may be so powerful against the evil powers, at home he receives scolding from his wife on forgetting a simple household duty. He practices the art of Tantra to fight evil powers and save the afflicted.

So is Taranath a superhero?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- Well, yes you can say so. An ordinary man with supernatural powers will be more apt actually.

Your look is different in this series. Can you tell us about it?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- I am seen wearing this long maroon coat only when I go to fight the evil powers. Or else I am dresses in normal attire like Dhoti-Punjabi.

Have you read the actual stories written by Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay and his son?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- I actually have read the graphic novel based on the original story. When I was offered the role, I had thought that I might play the role depicted in the graphic novel but after a few years. But lo!! I land up with the job a few years earlier.

You have already shot for a few episodes. What do you think of the making of the series?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- The production value of the serial is at par with the films that are being made now. This is especially true for the last twenty six episodes that we have shot for Taranath Tantrik.

Do you think that the small screen has more reach than films?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- Absolutely!! Television is a powerful medium. Even the super-hit films are also not watched by so many people as television serials. As a result it is easier to reach out to people with serials.

Apart from Taranath, what other film projects do you have in your kitty?

Tota Roy Chowdhury- I will be shooting for Ahalya 2 in August. A few other projects are also being discussed.

The call for the next shot came for Tota and our correspondent had to leave him for attending to his call of duty!!
