Bengali actor Tota Roy Chowdhury who is returning to the small screen after a span of seven long years will be seen enacting the role of Taranath Tantrik in the Colors Bangla serial. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actor in between shoots. Excerpts ..
Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- So you are again returning to the small screen again. What made you say yes to this role of Taranath Tantrik?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- My first love is and has always been films. So if I have to say yes to a project on television, it has to be immensely interesting and captivating. The role that I have been offered of Taranath is immensely interesting. I did not want to do saas-bahu dramas. So when I was offered the role, I was initially surprised because I myself did not think that I could suit the role. However my director Soumik Chattopadhyay persisted and believed in me. Hope the audience finds me apt in this role.
Tell us about Taranath, the character you play in the upcoming serial.
Tota Roy Chowdhury- Taranath Tantrik is a common Bengali man whom you will meet every other day. He has a family consisting of his wife Promila and daughter Chari. He however is blessed with supernatural powers with the help of which he fights with the evil powers. Though he may be so powerful against the evil powers, at home he receives scolding from his wife on forgetting a simple household duty. He practices the art of Tantra to fight evil powers and save the afflicted.
So is Taranath a superhero?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- Well, yes you can say so. An ordinary man with supernatural powers will be more apt actually.
Your look is different in this series. Can you tell us about it?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- I am seen wearing this long maroon coat only when I go to fight the evil powers. Or else I am dresses in normal attire like Dhoti-Punjabi.
Have you read the actual stories written by Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay and his son?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- I actually have read the graphic novel based on the original story. When I was offered the role, I had thought that I might play the role depicted in the graphic novel but after a few years. But lo!! I land up with the job a few years earlier.
You have already shot for a few episodes. What do you think of the making of the series?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- The production value of the serial is at par with the films that are being made now. This is especially true for the last twenty six episodes that we have shot for Taranath Tantrik.
Do you think that the small screen has more reach than films?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- Absolutely!! Television is a powerful medium. Even the super-hit films are also not watched by so many people as television serials. As a result it is easier to reach out to people with serials.
Apart from Taranath, what other film projects do you have in your kitty?
Tota Roy Chowdhury- I will be shooting for Ahalya 2 in August. A few other projects are also being discussed.
The call for the next shot came for Tota and our correspondent had to leave him for attending to his call of duty!!
