Babar Nam Gandhiji Famed Director Pavel’s Next Venture; A Documentary on Irom Chanu Sharmila

After making his debut with the Bengali film Babar Naam Gandhiji, director Pavel is back with a documentary film on Irom Chanu Sharmila. The young director had earlier made documentary films on Debabrata Biswas and Nabarun Bhattacharya.

Pavel initially wanted to make a biopic on Irom but she did not want a biopic made on her. She did not want anyone to act in her place. She will not give the rights to anyone to make a biopic to anyone. He went to meet with Irom in November and she took him to attend a meeting. Then she had a change of heart and asked him that he could make a documentary on her if he wanted.

Jaspreet Kaur will be financing this documentary. The young director will go for a few days to Manipur every month to complete the shooting. Pavel estimated that it will take him two and half years to finish the shooting. He is also hopeful that the lady might actually allow him to make a film on her.

Pavel has been working day and night to collect information on Irom. We wish the young director all the best for this new venture!!

Girija- a biopic on eminent Indian Classical singer Girija Devi Released in Kolkata; Summarizes the Life of the Singer

Girija, a film based on the life of the famous Indian classical singer Girija Devi was released in the presence of the Governor of west Bengal, Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi and other distinguished guests. The film release ceremony took place at ICCR.

Girija Devi was born in Varanasi and she started training at the tender age of five under the tutelage of vocalist and sarangi player Sanju Prasad Misra. Initially she began taking lessons from her guru in Tappa and Khayal before moving on to the other forms. Despite facing opposition from her mother and grandmother that no upper class lady performs publicly, the spirited singer made her public debut on All India Radio, Allahabad in 1949. The film traces her life and also highlights the many high and low points of her life and career. The background of the film is full of her soulful renditions.

Speaking at the occasion, Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi said “It gives me immense pleasure to come to such an event. Girija Devi has been mesmerizing the audiences with her soulful voice for many years now. To be able to attend the film release ceremony and to see parts of the film based on her life is a great experience indeed. She has been contributing in her own ways to the field of Indian classical music and we hope she continues to do so in the future too”.

Produced by Madhu Chandra and Sudha Datta, the film has been directed by Debapriya- Samanwaya and Sankalp Meshram.
