To celebrate the 450th Birth Anniversary of William Shakespeare, popular arts personality Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee along with actors Biplab Dasgupta and Bobby Chakraborty presented an evening of conversation and play reading as a tribute to the Bard. The event was presented by The Red Polka and 40 A Creative Studio in Ballygunge Place.
William Shakespeare may have died in 1616 but he still lives on with the 38 plays and the 154 sonnets that he penned down in his lifetime. Even after the passing of 450 years, he still continues to be popular. He is still studied, researched upon and also performed. It is also noteworthy that his works were the stimulating factors behind the Renaissance in Bengal.
The program began with the interaction with the audience about the relevance of William Shakespeare in today’s times. The interaction also highlighted on the fact at how Kolkata in 2015 looks at the works of the Brad. This was followed by dramatized readings from Othello, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet and a Bengali translation of Macbeth. The premise of this show is unique. This is simply because it is interactive and of course marries the spirit of the city with the Bard’s works. The show also shows a bit of a role reversal where Sujoy plays Lady Macbeth, true to the essence of Shakespearan theatre.
The evening was indeed a pleasure for the admirers of the writings of the Bard in today’s Kolkata.
