Satyajit Ray Film Screened at Ray Retrospective
“I never had the inclination to join films as opposed to Soumitra who wanted to act in films. It was solely due to Manik da that I entered the world of cinema. I am hugely indebted to him as for me he was a new beginning” said veteran actress Sharmila Tagore at the inauguration ceremony of retrospective of Satyajit Ray films titled Goldenray.
Also present at the occasion were Soumitra Chatterjee, Mamata Shankar, Sandip Ray, Biplab Chatterjee and Amitava Chandra, Deputy Managing Director, PC Chandra Jewellers.
The main aim of starting this initiative was to honor the Jewels of Bengal who have contributed much to the Bengali society. This is the reason behind this retrospective of Ray films which have done so much for Indian cinema with his films.
“I still remember the first day when I went for the shooting. I was dressed in a frock and when Manik da saw me, he was aghast. He immediately asked his wife to take me away and dress me up in a saree or else his vision of Aparna was getting muddled” said Sharmila Tagore who had the privilege of working with Satyajit Ray in a few films. The actress also said that the black rimmed spectacles that she wore in the film Nayak was to give her a matured look opposite Uttam Kumar.
Mamata Shankar who had worked with the master director in his last films was in awe of the man. “To get a chance in a small role in any of his films was a huge privilege for me. And when he actually said that he had considered me for a particular important role in his film, I felt I was on cloud nine. The feeling was just way beyond words” added the actress who is also a popular dancer.
Joy Baba Felunath was shown on the inaugural day of the retrospective. Goopy Gayen Bagha Byne will be shown next on 2nd May at Priya Cinemas. The third and the final movie to be shown in this retrospective is Sonar Kella on 10th May at Nandan III.
Be there to experience the world of Ray and revel in the magic created by the master director on the big screen.
