“The film is set in contemporary 2014, and there will be the use of mobile phones and BMW cars too. This mystery revolving around Byomkesh Bakshi is set in the later stages of his life. This is the reason why I have selected mature and experienced actors like Dhritiman Chatterjee and Pradip Mukherjee as the lead actors in my film” said director Saibal Mitra.

Saibal Mitra also added that the director making films on mysteries like Byomkesh Bakshi have also to take care of the finer technical aspects too. “For instance the piercing of the heart with the Sajarur Kanta is not possible. I had to think of a more practical aspect so that the audience does not feel that this is merely a figment of the imagination” said the director.

Dhritiman Chatterjee who essays the role of the aged Byomkesh Bakshi in the film said with a smile “The actors who have played the role of the sleuth before better watch out. We are coming and that too with a bang”.

Ensemble acting which has been brought back with this film will appeal to the tastes of the audiences. “The ensemble cast which had been revived in this film was not present in such a great way in some of the latest releases on Byomkesh Bakshi” added actor Dhritiman Chatterjee.

Produced by Macneill Media Pvt Ltd, the film Sajarur Kanta is being presented by Pradip Churiwal and Saikat Mitra. Konkona Sen Sharma, Indraneil Sengupta, Kaushik Sen, Biswajit Chakraborty, Debdut Ghosh will be seen in pivotal roles in the soon to release film.

Dibakar Banerjee at Kolkata Literary Meet

The trailer of his film “Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!” is receiving both positive responses from one segment of the audience while the other is busy complaining about the presentation of the detective Byomkesh Bakshi. The director Dibakar Banerjee engaged in a conversation about his film, his ideas about filming the detective and his expectations from the film at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet with journalist- film maker Pratim D Gupta.

Describing himself as a probashi Bengali (Non-residential Bengali), Director Dibakar Banerjee traced his literary influences which had actually backed up his desire of making the film on the Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi. “I read books voraciously and I still continue with this habit. I used to get a copy of Feluda every Puja but when asked for a copy of Byomkesh, I was told that I can read that when I was a little older. I immediately connected the book with that of puberty. And when you ask a lad of eleven years not to do something, that is the first thing that the guy will be actually doing” said Dibakar Banerjee.

The director who had actually made up his mind on becoming a film maker at the tender age of fourteen also mentioned that he had actually planned to make a film on the sleuth then. “Sharadindu’s characters are so much alive- you can actually believe them to be flesh and blood humans. Also there is a cinematic aspect to his writings which also appealed to my sensibilities” added the director.

The inspirations for the look and the feel of the film and also the posters came from the pages of the books like Dakat Kalir Jongole, Chhaya Kalo Kalo and many more. Pratul Chandra, Narayan Debnath, Mayukh Chowdhury have actually helped the director in the visualizing of the posters for his version of the detective.

The director is keeping his fingers crossed with this film. Dibakar Banerjee is ready to take both praise and criticisms from the audience when the film hits theatres in April.
