Javed Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar disucss “Heroes, Heroines Rebooted” at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet 2016

Father-daughter duo of Javed Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar was present at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet 2016 to discuss “Heroes, Heroines Rebooted” with Jai Arjun Singh.

According to filmmaker Zoya Akhtar “I have no belief in censorship. I mean what I want to make is entirely my choice. Whether I want to make an adult film, an action film or a film for the broader audience is my discretion. Having a censor simply means we will have to keep in mind certain things so that we have to comply to norms for getting the necessary A or U signs for the films”.

She also highlighted on issues like laws should be enforced so that children do not go and watch an adult film. She also highlighted on the responsibility of parents who should keep a tag on what their kids are actually watching.

Javed Akhtar on the other hand strongly opposed the view that films help in spreading violence. He also was very critical of those people who actually linked incidences of rape and other violence with films.

“I am not defending films. But I will like to bring to your attention the fact that even places where there are less halls, there is so much violence. Hence, this brings back my basic observation, how can people blame films for the violence and all these misdeeds happening in our society?” pointed out the veteran lyricist.

When asked about the Angry Young Man image popularized by Amitabh Bachchan, the lyricist said “Can anyone give a sociological proof as to the impact of films on society? There are no such findings till date and hence it will be very wrong to blame cinema for everything wrong happening in our society. By this approach the main problem will never be diagnosed”.

He concluded by saying that it is society which influences the filmmakers to make films. Society governs the filmmakers and it is not the other way round as many people like to believe.
