Songeet Jatra- Cultural project spearheaded by Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee
To celebrate the 243rd birthday of Raja Rammohan Roy, popular arts personality Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee showcased his new cultural project titled Songeet Jatra. Accompanying him was eminent Tagore exponent and legendary vocalist, Pramita Mallick. The event took place at Tollygunje Club.
Raja Rammohan Roy was a pioneer in the Renaissance in Bengal. He is also credited for laying the foundation stone of the modern Bengali literature. There was no literature for the common people. Raja Rammohan Roy broke away from this tradition and actually began to write prose in the language which the common people could easily comprehend. He was also a composer who wrote songs to be sung in the service of the Brahmo Samaj. The songs he composed were based on classical ragas like Behag and others.
Pramita Mallick sang songs like Giri Ganesh Amar, Tumi nirmol Koro, Bhaabi seei eke and others. Complimenting her songs was the adept storytelling (about many unsung poets and musicians) of Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee which kept the audiences mesmerized.
Also present at this evening were Usha Uthup, Barun Chanda, Shuvaprasanna, Usha Ganguly, Haimanti Shukla, Tanushree Shankar, Arjun Chakraborty, Sharbari Datta, Bharati Ray and other such eminent personalities.
The evening surely affirmed the importance and the necessity to archive the heritage of Bengal and also stressed on the importance of going back to the roots.
