Byomkesh Phire Elo (2014) Movie Review; Anjan Dutt Makes Way for a Grand Return of the Suave Sleuth

Apart from the very known facts that Bengalis are fond of sweets, have a fetish for celebrating the Durga Puja in any part of the world are globe trotters and can kill for football, their love affair with the two Bengali sleuths Feluda and Byomkesh also prominently stand out as distinguishing traits of the cult. The adventures of these two sleuths continue to be read and re-read by generations of Bengalis. Their various adventures have become the content for many a film and serials too. So when two reputed and eminent directors of Bengal take up the task of making films on both these sleuths, and releasing them on the very same day, the audience is sure to be spoilt for choices. While Sandip Ray’s Badshahi Angti on Feluda’s adventures has been received well, here’s what we felt about Anjan Dutt’s Byomkesh Phire Elo.

Byomkesh Phire Elo is based on Benisonghar by Saradindu Bandopadhyay. The film begins with Benimadhob narrating how his life is in danger as one of his family members is likely to murder him due to his wealth. He decides to change his will. Meanwhile he also employs Byomkesh Bakshi to solve this issue and find the culprit. However things take a wild turn when he is murdered even before the will is changed. Many people will benefit from his death. Benimadhob’s son Ajay or Benimadhob’s daughter Gayatri or her husband Gangadhor or Labony all have reason to kill the man. With so many suspects, how does Byomkesh unveil the murderer is what the film is all about.

For those who have read the original story, they will be well aware that making a film on this story is not an easy task. The story does not have the requisite cinematic elements which a director requires to make a film. Director Anjan Dutt takes up the challenge and succeeds fantastically in this mission. He makes the story cinematic and ensures that the attention of the audience does not stray for even a nanosecond. Yes!! The film is that gripping and when compared with the other films made by Dutt, this is sure to remain etched in the memory of all his fans for years to come.

With all that racy edgy plot, the quarrels between Byomkesh and Satyabati could have been well avoided. Moreover giving a soft side to the murderer, I feel was also not required. I mean, a criminal could be left as the person is. That would have added more flavor to this film.

Arghyakamal Mitra must be credited for helping Anjan Dutt in keeping the audience engaged in the film. He creates the right sequences and the right motifs which actually heighten the mystery effect in the film.

Music is very essential for films of this genre and the music by Neel Dutt is average. I expected a much gripping music for a detective movie of this stature.

Acting is one of the prime assets of this film. We see Saswata Chatterjee as Ajit in some scenes. But he does justify his presence with his great acting capabilities and proves why Ajit is so very essential to Byomkesh. Ushashie as Satyabati is too loud in some of the scenes. She could have been a bit toned in some scenes as that would have suited the film’s flow well. Kaushik Sen, Rahul, Locket Chatterjee, Biswajit Chakraborty all do justice to their roles that they have been entrusted with.

Abir Chatterjee who had another release as Feluda in Badshahi Angti which released the same day as this film was “quite tensed about how the audience will react” ( as stated by the actor in a recent interview with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent). However the actor deserves a thunderous applause for maintaining a clear line between portraying the two famous Bengali sleuths and if the rumors are to be trusted then I must say that Bengali Film lovers will lose out on a lot if Abir does not play Byomkesh in the upcoming films of the franchise. As the dhoti clad family man who quarrels with his wife and also as the intelligent detective, Abir is just perfect as Byomkesh. Those thick framed spectacles, the grace with which he carries himself in a dhoti all make him look authentic and oh so magnetic as the sleuth!

With Detective Byomkesh Bakshy by Dibakar Banerjee slated for release in 2015, we will all have to wait to see how Mr. Banerjee’s Byomkesh fares and whether it can garner better response from the audience than the Bengali counterparts.

Sholoana Bangaliana Rating- 3.5/5

Upcoming Hindi Film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy Poster Unveiled in Kolkata

Upcoming Bollywood Film Byomkesh Bakshi Poster Launch

“Bakshy! Detective Byomkesh Bakshy” – the dialogue itself speaks a lot about the upcoming Bollywood film, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. Based on the adventure of the popular Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi, the film has been directed by Dibakar Banerjee. The poster launch of this film took place at the Lalit Great Eastern Hotel in the presence of the director Dibakar Banerjee and Sushant Singh Rajput who plays the sleuth in the film.

Speaking at the occasion, the director highlighted why the hotel has been selected as the venue for the poster launch. “While making the film we had done enough research work so that we could get the basics right. Hence we got to learn of many incidents like the bombing by Japan on Calcutta. The bomb actually dropped near Great Eastern Hotel on 20th December 1943. Hence we decided to do the poster launch here at this venue. I mean this is the best venue that we can even get”.

Looking dapper in a dhoti and coat, Sushant Singh Rajput who plays the lead role of Byomkesh Bakshy in the film said “Wearing a dhoti was a big challenge for me initially. However I must add that it felt airy and also very comfortable”. To this, the director jokingly added that the actor also must have felt very liberated too.

The director sportingly answered many of the queries regarding the look and feel of the Bengali sleuth in the trailer. “Look this is my interpretation of the detective. I have avoided watching the films of other directors so that there is no influence on my mind while making the film. Even Anjan da (Anjan Dutt) rang me up and congratulated me for doing a good job with the trailer of the film. That feels good actually” said Dibakar Banerjee.

When questioned about the use of Bakshy instead of the Bengali Bakshi for the name of the sleuth, the director said “A title or a name undergoes a change with culture. With this film I am targeting the non-Bengali audience who are not even aware of the detective. Bakshi for the Bengali audience will become Bakshy for them”.

Dibakar Banerjee also stated some reasons for selecting Sushant Singh Rajput for the role. “Firstly he does not have a superstar image which he has to break. Secondly he is an upcoming talent who has a growing fan following based on his talent. All these factors made me decide and make him the Byomkesh of my film” said the director.

The music of the film is contemporary. The director clarified that he did not want a dated feel to his film and hence he made the music contemporary. He also wanted to see what will be the result of this experimentation on the minds of the audience.

The poster of the film has been designed by a Kolkata based firm. Rejecting popular opinion that the posters were inspired from Bond films or foreign graphic novels, the director said that it draws its origin from the illustrations of Dev Sahitya Kutir.

The director summed up the press conference with “Expect the unexpected” from his upcoming Hindi film.

The film is slated for release on 10th April 2015.
