Interview: Actress Ankita Chakraborty on Playing Damayanti in Anjan Dutt’s Byomkesh o Chiriakhana (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Actress Ankita Chakraborty is well known for her choice of roles that she portrayed in different films like Room no 103, Hing Ting Chot, Byomkesh Bakshi, Byomkesh Phire Elo and others. She is also an equally well known actress on the small screen with serials like Nir bhanga jhor, Binni dhaner khoi, Ishti kutum in her kitty. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actress in an exclusive chat about her upcoming Bengali film Byomkesh o Chiriakhana which is slated for release during the Pujas.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Another film on Byomkesh and that too releasing during the Pujas, you surely must be excited?

Ankita Chakraborty- Yes, I am excited. This is like a double treat for me. Ma Durga is coming and it is during this time that my film is releasing and I am so glad. What a good timing!!

Can you tell us something about the role you play in the film?

Ankita Chakraborty- I play Damayanti, one of the prime suspect in Byomkesh o Chiriakhana. I won’t reveal much about it now as that will take away the suspense from it. I know many have read the story and they will know it. For those who have not read it yet, let it be a surprise.

How was the experience of working with Anjan Dutt again?

Ankita Chakraborty- The experience was good. He is a good director and the fact that he is such a new individual everyday is what amazes me. The films on Byomkesh are getting good response, which is also a positive thing for the team that works on the project.

Have you read the story or seen the film that was made on this story years ago?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have not read the story but I have seen the film. Anjan da said that if I had not read the story, then I do not have to read it for the film. The script follows the story only and slight changes are made. Hence following the script is enough.

You have acted in some detective films now. Given a chance, will you like to play the role of a woman detective in the future?

Ankita Chakraborty- Well, I have not yet received any such role. But yes, I like experimenting with characters I play onscreen. If I am given such a role, I will surely give it a try.

Do you have any dream role that you want to portray on screen?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have done a handful of films and mostly with Anjan Dutt and Aniket Chattopadhyay. I am free to experiment with the roles offered to me. I am waiting for such a meaty role.

Many actresses are trying their luck in Bollywood. Have you given it a thought?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have a wish of doing roles in Bollywood films. I will try too. Roles which will suit me and my personality are the ones which I will do in the films.

A very cliché yet an important question- What are your expectations from the film, Byomkesh o Chiriakhana?

Ankita Chakraborty- Though I have not watched the film completely yet I am hopeful that it will have a good run at the box office. This is simply because the films on Byomkesh do well.

We wish the talented actress all the best for her upcoming Bengali film!!

From being a Fan of Feluda to portraying Feluda himself, Actor Abir Chaterjee shares his Badshahi Angti Shooting Memories with the Press

Video: Bengali Film Badshahi Angti Stars Meet the Press

The location is Oudh 1590 and enters Feluda with Topse. No, this is not a setting for a new mystery story revolving the legendary Bengali sleuth. This is the press conference of upcoming Bengali Film Badshahi Angti produced by Shree Venkatesh Films where actors Abir Chatterjee and Sourav Das were present along with director Sandip Ray, Bharat Kaul and Dwijen Bandopadhyay.

“This is a perfect setting for the press conference of the upcoming Feluda film. A Feluda film is always special for the Bengali audience and more so when a new Feluda will be presented for the audience” said director Sandip Ray.

Abir Chatterjee who plays the lead character of Feluda in the upcoming Bengali film was all smiles at the press conference. The actor looked visibly excited to be a part of this film. Speaking with Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent, the actor said “I know both my films (Badshahi Angti and Byomkesh Phire Elo) are releasing on the same day. I am a bit nervous and also have high expectations from the films. But this is a great treat for the Bengali film lovers. I mean a person who loves either Feluda or Byomkesh or both will be in for a real treat during the Christmas Holidays. Ideally this is the time when most of the other films on the sleuth Feluda had been released”. The actor who is a huge fan of the Bengali sleuth said “I have read all the stories of Feluda during my childhood. This helped me to get prepared for the role of Feluda. Moreover Babu da (Sandip Ray) had also instructed me that my portrayal of the sleuth must be different. There must not be any trace of the acting style of the actors who had enacted the role before me. I have interpreted the character according to my perception. This is like a tribute to Satyajit Ray”.

Abir Chatterjee who is being introduced as the new Feluda also added that the story which has been selected for the film is one of those where Jatayu is not present and Feluda has not established himself. He is just starting out as a sleuth. “This is quite similar to my state. I am also starting as Feluda and this is one of the initial stories written by Satyajit Ray. Hence this is also exciting for me as an actor. Mentally I was prepared always. But physically I had to prepare myself as this story tells the tale of a younger Feluda who was fit and agile. Hence the challenge was more to keep physically fit”.

Having shot for the film in both the older and the newer parts of the city of Lucknow, Abir Chatterjee was in awe of the architecture of the city. “Many of the buildings which had been mentioned in the story by Mr. Ray are still intact. This was a great experience. Shooting for the film in the older parts of Lucknow was great. When we moved to Haridwar, the landscape changed. This will be a unique experience for the audience who will get to see variety of landscape in one film”. Abir who had worked with Sandip Ray before also mentioned that it was a great pleasure working with the director.

Sourav Das who is the new Topse claimed to be a blind fan of Feluda and Satyajit Ray. “This is like a tribute to Satyajit Ray. We all have worked hard on making this film. This is an honest and sincere effort on our part” said the young actor.

Badshahi Angti releases on the same day as Byomkesh Phire Elo; 19th of December. The two films on two legendary sleuths will surely leave the Bengali audience spoilt for choices. We will have to wait and watch to understand whether Abir as Feluda or Abir as Byomkesh gets more acceptance among the audience.
