Books on Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Rituparno Ghosh Launched by Sharmila Tagore at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary meet 2016

Two books “The world of Hrishikesh Mukherjee: The filmmaker everyone loves” and “Rituparno Ghosh: Cinema, gender and Art” was recently released by ace actress Sharmila Tagore at the Tata Steel Kolkata literary meet event.

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore had worked with both the directors and spoke at length about her association and work experience with them in two sessions titled “The Babumoshai in Bombay” and “Ritu Utshob”.

Speaking about her association with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the actress said “It was indeed a pleasure working with him in quite a few films. The way he made his films appealed to a broader section of the audience and surely everyone loved him”.

On being questioned about the sensational bikini shoot which she did for the cover of a magazine, the veteran actress said “I did not do it for publicity. I am 71 now. What is the use of wearing a bikini now? I wore it at the right time. Moreover I had Tiger’s support and he even mentioned that I must have looked nice. That was very helpful. Sexy images do not last long. Hence for longevity in this industry I opted for roles which I did in films like Aradhana”.

In the next session, the actress who had worked with Rituparno Ghosh in his film Shubho Mahurat regretted that she had lost someone she could speak with and also enhance her knowledge. “Ritu was younger to me but he had so much knowledge. He was well read and that showed. He often enacted out scenes during the shooting and we often got angry with him. But the reason we became angry was because he did the scene better than the actors. He was a powerhouse of talent for sure” said the actress.

The actress had kept screenplays handwritten by Rituparno Ghosh as her prized possession. “He could write so fast and that kept me amazed always. He was a great talent. Coming out with this book was a great idea. We can expect more literature and discussion about his life. We are impatient and we want to keep his memory alive. This book is a good addition” added the actress.

The two sessions on these two iconic film makers surely made the audience understand the work and ideals of these two personalities better.
