Interview: Actor Yash Dasgupta on his Debut Bengali Film Gangster (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Yash-Dasgupta-interview

Remember Aranya Sinha Roy of Star Jalsha serial Bojhena se Bojhena? Good news for his fans. Actor Yash Dasgupta who played the role of Aranya will be seen as Guru in the upcoming Bengali film Gangster. Sholoana Bangaliana caught up with the actor in an exclusive interview. Excerpts…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- What made you say “yes” to the role of Guru in the film Gangster?

Yash Dasgupta- I was with the film from the time the script was being written down. The person who wrote the story is my friend. It is not that I have helped in the concept or anything. But I had belief in the story. I always believe that if I like the story in which I am acting, then I can expect that the audience will love it. Or else how can I expect a story which I had no faith in to be loved and appreciated by the audience? This story touched my heart and hence I believe this will touch the hearts of the audience too.

Yash-Dasgupta-Gangster

You are making your debut in Birsa Dasgupta’s film. How was the experience of working with him?

Yash Dasgupta- I believe that this is Birsa’s best work till date as a director. He has gone beyond his capabilities in the film. The script has been so wonderfully utilized that I think that many seated in the hall will have tears in their eyes. The film Gangster is not simply a story of a gangster of about his love. It is also about redefining love.

Mimi and your chemistry are much talked about. So how was it sharing screen space with her?

Yash Dasgupta- To be very frank, I am glad she was part of the film. Otherwise I and Birsa are very serious and reserved individuals. The film would have been shot in utter seriousness. It is she who in between shots did some pranks and gave us comic relief. She is however a talented actress. Her fans will be amazed to see her acting skills in the film. If I was a girl, I would have loved to get the role that she acted in. She is the one to watch out for.

Yash-Dasgupta-interview

Bengali film songs are shot abroad. But you have shot the entire film abroad. How was the shooting experience?

Yash Dasgupta- It was a wonderful experience. The weather was so good that we had no trouble shooting the film. Not only in Istanbul, but we have shot the film at various places in Turkey. Since the country is located at the middle of the Earth, the days are long and sunset would happen at 9 o’ clock. This meant we got long hours of sunlight and we could shoot to our heart’s content. Though we may not have gone on sightseeing, the schedule was such that we shot at beautiful locations and made the most of the stay.

We often send the shot portions for color corrections to the DI. But in this case we had to send it so that the color could be dimmed a little as the real color was so unnatural. We also had long adda sessions as no one had the hurry to go back home.

Will we get to see you again on television?

Yash Dasgupta- Television is my backbone. Whatever little I have become is because of television. If I get something good, I will do television again. When there are integration programs for the film on television, I feel like I have come back home.

You are reserved in your real life and so is Aranya and so is Guru. Was the decision to take up such characters entirely coincidental or did you intentionally pick them up as you will be relate with them easily?

Yash Dasgupta- (laughs) It is purely coincidental that I have done characters which are reserved just like me. Aranya loved Pakhi in a different way and Guru’s way of expressing love is different. But yes, I like characters which speak lesser words and express more through their eyes. But I also did Radhe in the serial which was completely different from me. As an actor I have to keep on pushing myself and doing different roles. For playing Guru, I had to learn Muay-Thai. I have tried to present myself in a new way in front of the audience. I just hope that they like me.

Wishing the actor all the best for his debut Bengali film Gangster!!

Interview: Actress Ankita Chakraborty on Playing Damayanti in Anjan Dutt’s Byomkesh o Chiriakhana (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Actress-Ankita-interview

Actress Ankita Chakraborty is well known for her choice of roles that she portrayed in different films like Room no 103, Hing Ting Chot, Byomkesh Bakshi, Byomkesh Phire Elo and others. She is also an equally well known actress on the small screen with serials like Nir bhanga jhor, Binni dhaner khoi, Ishti kutum in her kitty. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actress in an exclusive chat about her upcoming Bengali film Byomkesh o Chiriakhana which is slated for release during the Pujas.

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Another film on Byomkesh and that too releasing during the Pujas, you surely must be excited?

Ankita Chakraborty- Yes, I am excited. This is like a double treat for me. Ma Durga is coming and it is during this time that my film is releasing and I am so glad. What a good timing!!

Can you tell us something about the role you play in the film?

Ankita Chakraborty- I play Damayanti, one of the prime suspect in Byomkesh o Chiriakhana. I won’t reveal much about it now as that will take away the suspense from it. I know many have read the story and they will know it. For those who have not read it yet, let it be a surprise.

Actress-Ankita-interview

How was the experience of working with Anjan Dutt again?

Ankita Chakraborty- The experience was good. He is a good director and the fact that he is such a new individual everyday is what amazes me. The films on Byomkesh are getting good response, which is also a positive thing for the team that works on the project.

Have you read the story or seen the film that was made on this story years ago?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have not read the story but I have seen the film. Anjan da said that if I had not read the story, then I do not have to read it for the film. The script follows the story only and slight changes are made. Hence following the script is enough.

You have acted in some detective films now. Given a chance, will you like to play the role of a woman detective in the future?

Ankita Chakraborty- Well, I have not yet received any such role. But yes, I like experimenting with characters I play onscreen. If I am given such a role, I will surely give it a try.

Ankita-Byomkesh-o-Chiriakhana

Do you have any dream role that you want to portray on screen?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have done a handful of films and mostly with Anjan Dutt and Aniket Chattopadhyay. I am free to experiment with the roles offered to me. I am waiting for such a meaty role.

Many actresses are trying their luck in Bollywood. Have you given it a thought?

Ankita Chakraborty- I have a wish of doing roles in Bollywood films. I will try too. Roles which will suit me and my personality are the ones which I will do in the films.

A very cliché yet an important question- What are your expectations from the film, Byomkesh o Chiriakhana?

Ankita Chakraborty- Though I have not watched the film completely yet I am hopeful that it will have a good run at the box office. This is simply because the films on Byomkesh do well.

We wish the talented actress all the best for her upcoming Bengali film!!

Interview: Lyricist Srijato on His Debut As An Actor in Srijit Mukherji’s Film Zulfiqar (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Srijato-Exclusive-Interview-Zulfiqar

He is a popular lyricist. And now with Srijit Mukherji’s film Zulfiqar, he will be making his debut as an actor. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with Srijato who revealed about the character he played in Zulfiqar and his experiences of facing the camera for the first time in his life. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- So you have finally turned into an actor with this film. Did you have any prior acting experiences?

Srijato- No, I did not have any experience what-so-ever of facing the camera. My one and only experience of acting was taking part in a play which we enacted for the people in our locality. I was very small then and I was given the role of the mouse. To be very frank, I wanted to play the role of the bear. However the organizers felt that I did not have the personality to become a bear. As a result what happened was I said all the dialogues of the bear when I got up on stage. I was beaten up by the person later who was to play the role of the bear. You see this rage, jealousy, struggle for power or trying to become someone else on stage is also Shakespeare. That was my first and I thought will be my last acting stint.

So how did you bag yourself a role in Zulfiqar?

Srijato- I did not have the faintest idea that I will be acting again. But Srijit contacted me one day with the script. I play Trebonius from Julius Caesar in the film. I have always remained open to new experiences. I feel this enriches one as an individual. I have always profited from these new experiences.

How did you prepare yourself for the role?

Srijato- Well, I did not have the time to read the whole play Julius Caesar and prepare myself for the role as the time was short. I was just browsing through the pages and also referring to Srijit’s script. I must say that the script is wonderful. When I was reading it, I understood the importance of Shakespeare even in 2016. Srijit has blended well the syndicate politics and has come up with a great script. I am glad I am part of this film.

Srijato-Koushik-Sen-Zulfiqar

How was your experience of shooting for Zulfiqar?

Srijato- Apart from the script what made my experience so memorable was the actors with whom I was acting in the film. I shared screen space with some of the best actors in our industry. I shot for some days with Koushik (Sen), Dev and other actors. I got to learn so much by observing them. However I have just followed Srijit’s instructions and delivered. Srijit may have adapted the storyline for 2016 but while acting I understood the vision of the playwright who could write about universal emotions with such dexterity so many years ago. I was again amazed to actually see that Shakespeare had so much idea about life that he could highlight every emotion in the course of a single play. Not many playwrights could have done that. He could do this and hence he became Shakespeare. During acting, a bruise mark has been formed on my body. This will be a memorable mark indeed.

Why will a bruise mark be so memorable? Can you share the story behind this incident?

Srijato- When I was going to give my first shot, it was my death scene. I think cinema is the only place where you again give five shots after you have actually died in the first take. (laughs). We were shooting in Shalimar Shipyard. I was sipping tea when I found Koushik coming with blood oozing out from his neck. I was scared. Initially I thought it was makeup. But then I realized that they were not using dummies and that the blood was real. Koushik was being treated and then he went home. After this came my death scene.

I was to shoot for a chase sequence. The last time I had to run was for my school sports meet, many years ago. And so I had to run many times but Srijit was not happy. He asked me to run again saying the next shot will be better. I have asthma and I could feel the pressure building up. He said that I did not look like I was scared of death. Frankly in real life I am not afraid of death and hence in front of the camera that was not coming out. What happened next was I short of breath and I fell down. I wounded myself and I was attended by the assistant directors who did the necessary first aid and then gave me a knee cap to wear for the time being. I was also given three hours rest. It is then I understood what a great team Srijit had. Dev and Parambrata came just for that scene’s shooting. But they waited for me, despite their busy schedules. After three hours I got up and then I shot for my death scene.

Srijit-Mukherji-Zulfiqar

You have acted in a film based on Shakespeare’s play. How much relevant is Shakespeare in today’s time?

Srijato- Shakespeare and the emotions and feelings he wrote about are relevant in 2016 and will be relevant after hundred years too. Maybe cinema will become a backdated medium then and something new will take its place. But Shakespeare will not become backdated. The emotions will traverse the barriers of time, place and culture. He is ageless and timeless!!

We hope that Srijato makes a mark in acting with Zulfiqar!! Wishing him all the very best for this new stint!!

Interview: Actress Swastika Mukherjee on Playing Bibi in Pratim D Gupta’s Shaheb Bibi Golaam

Swastika-Mukherjee-hot-picture

She is well known for her portrayal of bold and strong women characters on-screen. She will be next seen playing a housewife in director Pratim D Gupta’s thriller Shaheb Bibi Golaam. Actress Swastika Mukherjee was engaged in an avid conversation by Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent at the trailer launch event of the film. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Judging by the trailer, we see a little different housewife on screen. What will you like to say about the character?

Swastika Mukherjee- I simply do not want to use the words like strong or bold to define the character of Jaya in the film Shaheb Bibi Golaam. Yes, this is a different character- one that I have not played before. At this stage of my career, why will I select a weak character? This is indeed a strong character in that sense. Jaya is a normal next door housewife but she has different shades. This is unlike something that I have even attempted beforehand.

How did you prepare yourself for the role?

Swastika Mukherjee- I did not do any preparations as such. I just did rehearsals for the dance movements as I was not familiar with those. I just had seen them on television beforehand. Pratim did give me some references to check out. I thought I would faint by seeing those. I have tried to do my very best. Let’s see how the audience likes my performance.

Swastika-Mukherjee-Interview

Every character that you have played had given a message. Is there any message that your character in the film will be giving to the audience?

Swastika Mukherjee– My character talks about emancipation and liberation. As a woman, it speaks about saying out about the desires which may be sexual or emotional. It also highlights on the coming out of a woman from the taboos inflicted on her. Look when a woman uses slangs, it turns the heads of many people. When I speak slangs for a role, people start thinking with whom they will go to the hall to watch the film. They cannot take their mother or wife for such films. But when a male actor like Prosenjit Chatterjee uses slangs in Baishe Srabon, the same group of people claps and whistles at the halls. Hence with the help of this character, it is shown that it is not wrong when a married woman speaks about her inner sexual needs.

You are working with Pratim for the first time. How was the experience?

Swastika Mukherjee- Well, he is a new director but since I know him beforehand I did not have any problems. I did not have to think that how is he as a person or how he will be instructing us. Since I knew him, it helped me during the shooting very much.

Swastika-Mukherjee-Shaheb-Bibi-Golaam

How did you bag the role?

Swastika Mukherjee- I got a call from Pratim even before he decided about the casting of the other characters. But this does not mean that I have huge home work for the film. I never do for any of my films. I read the script, listen to the director and then formulate my ideas about how the character should be portrayed. I did the same for this film. The only thing I practiced was the dance.

What are the other projects that you are working on?

Swastika Mukherjee- I have worked in Aniket Chattopadhyay’s film based on the sleuth Kiriti where I play an Anglo-Indian woman and there is another film named Headlines.

Wishing Swastika Mukherjee all the best for Shaheb Bibi Golaam and we hope that she continues to do such bold and strong roles in future!!

Interview: Bollywood Actor Gajendra Chauhan on Becoming Dr.Shyamaprasad Mukherjee for Milan Bhowmik’s Film Danga

Gajendra-Chauhan-Danga

A semi-bald man in white dhoti and Punjabi was walking down the stairs as Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent waited for an interview with ace actor Gajendra Chauhan. Little did the interviewer realize that this semi bald individual is the actor himself!! The makeup was so good that one had to look twice or maybe thrice to actually know that it is the actor. Here is what the actor had to say after the initial surprise wore off from our interviewer. Read on…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You look so much like Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee. I could not actually recognize you.

Gajendra Chauhan- (smiles) The hard work is paying off then. If you can be convinced that I am Dr. Mukherjee, then the audiences will also be similarly convinced too.

Gajendra-Chauhan-Interview

How did you bag the role?

Gajendra Chauhan- Director Milan Bhowmik was looking for actors for the role. However he could not find one suitable for the role. This was even before I was made the Chairman of FTII. He asked me to play this role. But I was skeptical whether I will fit the bill or not.

So how did he convince you to play this character?

Gajendra Chauhan- Well, due to my skepticism, a look test was being conducted. The look test gave me the confidence that I will be able to pull off the character. And hence I started with this film.

Gajendra-Chauhan-interview

Since the film is being shot in Bengali (and Hindi too), did you have problem with the language?

Gajendra Chauhan- As an actor, I have always believed that language should not be a barrier. I have done films in other languages too like Malayalam, Assamese and so on. I am getting ample help in speaking Bengali. Moreover dubbing will be done later on too.

How did you do the research for getting in the shoes of Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee?

Gajendra Chauhan- I went to his house and did some research on him. I saw his pictures to understand his postures well. A funny thing happened during our shooting in Medinipur. The manager of the hotel had come to call me as the shot was ready. However he found me in dhoti and Punjabi and it made him realize that I was not the actor Gajendra Chauhan. When he asked where the actor was I said he was in the bathroom. And he actually waited. I was so happy that I could actually carry this off.

Gajendra-Chauhan-Danga

You have done a Bengali film before, the name of which is Durga. How was the experience of shooting for this film?

Gajendra Chauhan- I am having a great time shooting this film. The people of Kolkata are good hearted people who are also art lovers and religious. I have been to the city during Durga Pujas. And look at the contribution of Bengalis in Bollywood. It is huge. There are so many actors, directors, singers who are Bengalis. I am actually glad that I am part of this film made on such an eminent personality. It is sad that no one before had made any film on him.

The call for his next shot came and we had to end the interview!! We wish he makes a mark with his portrayal of Dr. Shayamaprasad Mukherjee as he did years ago in portraying Yudhisthir in the TV series Mahabharat.
