Upcoming-Bengali-film

The shooting of the upcoming Bengali film Sparsha-The Touch took place recently. Present at the shooting was director Sayantan Mukherjee, Lolita Chatterjee, Mafin and Manali Dey.

Sparsha – The Touch is a love story between two women set in the year 1957. Revati Nandini Roy, an upcoming poet of Bengali literature was leaving for Paris after her marriage. Just before her marriage she discovered her love and passion for her own cousin sister Madhubala but it was too late. Revati realized that she is going to miss Madhubala forever in her life as she going far away. After 55 years, this pre-lesbian saga revives again when one fine morning old Madhubala opened the door and found out Revati standing in front of her. It was Rini the granddaughter of Revati who came all the way from Paris to see her own root in Bengal. Her grandmother gave her a diary when she was in her death bed and told her to give it to Madhubala whenever she will visit India. Rini almost looked like her grandmother Revati. Madhubala is mesmerized. The fire of love and lust almost burns 82 year Madhubala inside out slowly makes her paranoid.

“I feel that Lolita Chatterjee is among the most under-rated actresses. She is such a brilliant performer. The industry did not use her fully. She is such a darling. Working with her is a wonderful experience” said director Sayantan Mukherjee.

Lolita Chatterjee (Old Madhubala), Mafin (Rini and Revati) and Manali Dey (Young Madhubala) will be seen in important roles in this film.

Speaking about her character, Manali said “I play the young Madhubala in the film. She is a tom boy. Depicting a tom boy in a sari is quite a challenge for me. the bigger challenge is to play the young version of Lolita Chatterjee who is a diva and looks good in front of the camera always. This is a great opportunity for me and I am putting in my best efforts to make the character look lively on screen”. The actress also added that the veteran actress Lolita Chatterjee was a darling on the sets of the film. She also mentioned having watched many films like Jay Jayanti in which Lolita Chatterjee acted.

The film has been produced by Sujay Mukherjee and Jay Prakash Sarkar. The editor is Ravi Ranjan Mitra and the DOP is Avijeet Nandy. The music has been composed by Shiladitya – Raj while the lyrics have been penned by Sreeraj Mitra.

Interview: Actress Swastika Mukherjee on Playing Bibi in Pratim D Gupta’s Shaheb Bibi Golaam

Swastika-Mukherjee-hot-picture

She is well known for her portrayal of bold and strong women characters on-screen. She will be next seen playing a housewife in director Pratim D Gupta’s thriller Shaheb Bibi Golaam. Actress Swastika Mukherjee was engaged in an avid conversation by Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent at the trailer launch event of the film. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Judging by the trailer, we see a little different housewife on screen. What will you like to say about the character?

Swastika Mukherjee- I simply do not want to use the words like strong or bold to define the character of Jaya in the film Shaheb Bibi Golaam. Yes, this is a different character- one that I have not played before. At this stage of my career, why will I select a weak character? This is indeed a strong character in that sense. Jaya is a normal next door housewife but she has different shades. This is unlike something that I have even attempted beforehand.

How did you prepare yourself for the role?

Swastika Mukherjee- I did not do any preparations as such. I just did rehearsals for the dance movements as I was not familiar with those. I just had seen them on television beforehand. Pratim did give me some references to check out. I thought I would faint by seeing those. I have tried to do my very best. Let’s see how the audience likes my performance.

Swastika-Mukherjee-Interview

Every character that you have played had given a message. Is there any message that your character in the film will be giving to the audience?

Swastika Mukherjee– My character talks about emancipation and liberation. As a woman, it speaks about saying out about the desires which may be sexual or emotional. It also highlights on the coming out of a woman from the taboos inflicted on her. Look when a woman uses slangs, it turns the heads of many people. When I speak slangs for a role, people start thinking with whom they will go to the hall to watch the film. They cannot take their mother or wife for such films. But when a male actor like Prosenjit Chatterjee uses slangs in Baishe Srabon, the same group of people claps and whistles at the halls. Hence with the help of this character, it is shown that it is not wrong when a married woman speaks about her inner sexual needs.

You are working with Pratim for the first time. How was the experience?

Swastika Mukherjee- Well, he is a new director but since I know him beforehand I did not have any problems. I did not have to think that how is he as a person or how he will be instructing us. Since I knew him, it helped me during the shooting very much.

Swastika-Mukherjee-Shaheb-Bibi-Golaam

How did you bag the role?

Swastika Mukherjee- I got a call from Pratim even before he decided about the casting of the other characters. But this does not mean that I have huge home work for the film. I never do for any of my films. I read the script, listen to the director and then formulate my ideas about how the character should be portrayed. I did the same for this film. The only thing I practiced was the dance.

What are the other projects that you are working on?

Swastika Mukherjee- I have worked in Aniket Chattopadhyay’s film based on the sleuth Kiriti where I play an Anglo-Indian woman and there is another film named Headlines.

Wishing Swastika Mukherjee all the best for Shaheb Bibi Golaam and we hope that she continues to do such bold and strong roles in future!!

Interview: Bollywood Actor Gajendra Chauhan on Becoming Dr.Shyamaprasad Mukherjee for Milan Bhowmik’s Film Danga

Gajendra-Chauhan-Danga

A semi-bald man in white dhoti and Punjabi was walking down the stairs as Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent waited for an interview with ace actor Gajendra Chauhan. Little did the interviewer realize that this semi bald individual is the actor himself!! The makeup was so good that one had to look twice or maybe thrice to actually know that it is the actor. Here is what the actor had to say after the initial surprise wore off from our interviewer. Read on…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- You look so much like Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee. I could not actually recognize you.

Gajendra Chauhan- (smiles) The hard work is paying off then. If you can be convinced that I am Dr. Mukherjee, then the audiences will also be similarly convinced too.

Gajendra-Chauhan-Interview

How did you bag the role?

Gajendra Chauhan- Director Milan Bhowmik was looking for actors for the role. However he could not find one suitable for the role. This was even before I was made the Chairman of FTII. He asked me to play this role. But I was skeptical whether I will fit the bill or not.

So how did he convince you to play this character?

Gajendra Chauhan- Well, due to my skepticism, a look test was being conducted. The look test gave me the confidence that I will be able to pull off the character. And hence I started with this film.

Gajendra-Chauhan-interview

Since the film is being shot in Bengali (and Hindi too), did you have problem with the language?

Gajendra Chauhan- As an actor, I have always believed that language should not be a barrier. I have done films in other languages too like Malayalam, Assamese and so on. I am getting ample help in speaking Bengali. Moreover dubbing will be done later on too.

How did you do the research for getting in the shoes of Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee?

Gajendra Chauhan- I went to his house and did some research on him. I saw his pictures to understand his postures well. A funny thing happened during our shooting in Medinipur. The manager of the hotel had come to call me as the shot was ready. However he found me in dhoti and Punjabi and it made him realize that I was not the actor Gajendra Chauhan. When he asked where the actor was I said he was in the bathroom. And he actually waited. I was so happy that I could actually carry this off.

Gajendra-Chauhan-Danga

You have done a Bengali film before, the name of which is Durga. How was the experience of shooting for this film?

Gajendra Chauhan- I am having a great time shooting this film. The people of Kolkata are good hearted people who are also art lovers and religious. I have been to the city during Durga Pujas. And look at the contribution of Bengalis in Bollywood. It is huge. There are so many actors, directors, singers who are Bengalis. I am actually glad that I am part of this film made on such an eminent personality. It is sad that no one before had made any film on him.

The call for his next shot came and we had to end the interview!! We wish he makes a mark with his portrayal of Dr. Shayamaprasad Mukherjee as he did years ago in portraying Yudhisthir in the TV series Mahabharat.

Interview: Actress Pujarini Ghosh on Becoming Ratan for The Film Postmaster (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Pujarini-Ghosh-Postmaster

Her debut film Chitra made the audience appreciate her acting capability and great screen presence. With her upcoming Bengali film, Postmaster, Tollywood actress Pujarini Ghosh is all set to wow the audience yet again. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent engaged the actress in a candid conversation. Excerpts…

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- How did you bag the role in Postmaster?

Pujarini Ghosh- I was shooting for my last release Chitra when I got a call from Srijon my director for this film. I had no idea that it was on Rabindranath Tagore’s Postmaster. They just asked about my dates and said they would like to narrate the story to me. I just knew that Ritwick Chakraborty will be doing the male lead. It was only after I met them I got to know that they are planning to film Rabindranath Tagore’s Postmaster! When Srijon saw me he was quite unsure that I can pull of the look of Ratan. Every other day they would call me and say yes Pujarini you are doing the project and the next moment they were unsure. The impatience inside me was growing. So one day I got pissed and told them not to give me false hopes. Then they sat with our makeup artist Azad da. They had a long discussion with him regarding my look and then finally I got a call from them to sign the contract!!

Pujarini-Ghosh-Interview

Have you read the story? Did you like the improvisations made in the story by the director?

Pujarini Ghosh- Of course I have read it. Every Bengali I think have read the story or watched the film Postmaster. Like everyone I was also curious to know how they want to treat it to make it into a full length feature. This was a short story of Tagore and Satyajit Ray had already made it into a film which was also a short film and a part of his film Teen Kanya! I still remember I met Srijon at a CCD outlet when he narrated to me his version of Postmaster. And trust me I was almost crying. I loved it so much that I just wanted to do it no matter what. See you don’t always get the chance and the opportunity to be Tagore’s heroine. But as an actor I can only wish the rest depends on a lot of things. But I really wanted to be Ratan as I loved how Srijon has conceived the story keeping the essence of Rabindranath Tagore’s tale intact. But I knew it will be a very difficult character.
Pujarini-Ghosh-Postmaster

How did you prepare yourself for this role?

Pujarini Ghosh- Playing Ratan was not easy. I think it’s one of the most beautiful and difficult character to portray on screen. I am a very modern girl. I was born and brought up in a metropolitan city. I had no clue how it is to live in a village until I was there at Plassey shooting for Postmaster. It was a very difficult phase of my life to be Ratan. I had a month long workshop when Srijon helped me to understand the psyche of the girl. Her emotions, her situations, her innocence, her happiness, her sorrows!! As I had to look like a village girl they stopped all my hair and skin maintenance for over a month and I only had puffed rice (muri) and boiled chicken. But during the shoot as we shot at a remote location, I only survived on muri and later fruits as nothing were available. Even when I was not giving my shots I used to roam around in the village barefoot in that chilling cold. I had scenes where I had to run which we shot for like 10-12 days as we just needed the magic light. So after a point I couldn’t even walk as it was immensely painful and after every shot I used to soak my feet in hot water. I could not sleep for nights and I used to cry because of the pain. But after the first screening of the film at the Delhi International Film Festival I felt that the pain was worth it! So a lot of effort was put in to become Ratan.

How was the working experience with Ishaan and director Srijon?

Pujarini Ghosh- It was great working with both of them. Srijon is technically very sound and he knows what he wants. He has great sense of music. He is a gold medalist from London College of Music and also holds distinction in classical music. I am sure now you know why all the songs in the film are so beautiful. He was very strict on the sets. We hated him during the shoot but later when we saw the film we loved him more. And Ishaan is a sweetheart costar. He was super caring and super funny. We were a crazy combo. We share some of the funniest moments on the sets. The chemistry that you see between the postmaster and Ratan was all because of the lovely friendship we share.

Postmaster-actress-Pujarini
You have a different look in the film. Did you give any inputs for your look in the film?

Pujarini Ghosh- Yes we had brainstorming sessions to create the look that Srijon needed. Even after the look test we were not happy. We wanted to make Ratan look authentic as it was not important to make Ratan look beautiful. The raw beauty was needed. They used to apply 3-4 layers of organic color on my skin to make me look tanned which they got for me from London, as any other color might cause irritation on my skin.  We tried to make Ratna look as alive and real as possible.
Can you share any memorable incidents of working in the film?

Pujarini Ghosh- Everyday more than hundred thousand villagers used to come to see the shooting. As we shot at a virgin location it was the first time people got to see shooting. It helped many people as they started different business near the shooting spot. It was like a fair for them. A new toto-route started just for people who used to come and watch the shooting religiously. There were villagers who came from over 200kms just to see us. And we sometimes had to stop the shoot as it used to be difficult for the local police force to manage the crowd. All they wanted us was to wave our hands to the crowd. But they also helped us immensely. Without their support it was difficult for us to shoot in that remote location for so many days.

What are your expectations from the film, now that it has so well received at the film festivals?

Pujarini Ghosh- Right now I am not expecting anything. I just want my audience to go to the theatres and watch Postmaster for a complete cinematic experience. Since a long time, stories were missing from the narratives of any film. Postmaster tells a story which will be loved by all. It has a universal appeal. We were amazed by the response our film received at the Delhi International Film Festival. People from all over the globe loved the film. They don’t understand Bengali but they loved the film they lived a cinematic experience through Postmaster. That way I can tell you half our battle is won no matter what. But now I would like my city to accept Postmaster.

Pujarini-Ghosh-Interview

Are you happy with the kind of offers that you are getting now?

Pujarini Ghosh- Yes I am quite happy. Because I am getting challenging characters already which means I am getting noticed and directors are trying to experiment with my look and my characters. I am very young and I want to experiment with my looks, characters and push myself as much as possible. I am ready to do whatever it takes to make every character I do believable and alive. This is what every actor wants. I am scared of getting stereotyped. The actor in me will die if I have to keep on doing the same things in every film I do.

Do you have any dream role?

Pujarini Gh0sh- I have so many dream roles. Every good film I watch I imagine myself doing it and wish if someday.. I am one greedy actress I tell you!

So what are your next projects?

Pujarini Ghosh- I am doing my next film which is going on floor from 14th July. I am super excited as it is also one character I am really looking forward to. Right now I am busy with the promotions of Postmaster and the workshops for my next film.

We hope that the effort of Pujarini pays off and her film Postmaster strikes gold at the box office!!
