Kolkata Charitable Organization Behala Srijan to help in Re-Settlement of Street Children

Behala Srijan, a registered social and cultural organization organized a festive evening of monsoon melodies- Sawan, soulfully dedicated to eminent vocalist late Vidushi Purnima Chaudhuri. On this special day, the members of this organization took up the mission of providing rehabilitation to underprivileged street children and establish them in the mainstream society with due dignity and recognition. Pandit Alok Lahiri-eminent Sarod player, S. Ramakrishnan- retired IPS, Alokananda Roy – dancer and Swami Somatmananda Ji were present at the occasion.

Behala-Srijan

The mission of Behala Srijan is to provide effective educational support at the primary level to the students from the underprivileged sections of the society. It also aims to rehabilitate socially uprooted street children in the mainstream society with due dignity and recognition which they usually lack. They will also be providing help for the economic development, income generation and cultural upliftment of these children.

Twenty children between the age groups of 8 to 12 years were given educational aid by the eminent guests. The children were mainly from the Balakhali, Julpia and the Baghbazar Mayer Bari area. These areas have been considered as areas of illegal settlement by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The parents of these children either work as domestic help or as van and rickshaw pullers.

Speaking at the occasion, Alokananda Roy said “When institutions come up with such noble aims, it is always acts as a blessing for those children who are deprived from the basic amenities of life. With such encouragement, they will be able to move on ahead in life and bring about a change with the help of education”.

The evening also saw a beautiful semi-classical performance by Sudakshina Alagia and a classical Kathak dance by Anurekha Ghosh. Sudakshina Alagia performed a Bandish, Thumri, Kajri, Dadra and Bhajan.
