New Bengali Film Sondhe Namar Agey Review; A Team Effort that Shows

With Tollywood completely taken by the detective mania and directors making films on the different Bengali sleuths like Feluda, Byomkesh Bakshi, Kakababu, how could journalist turned director Rhitobrata Bhattacharya not try his hands at presenting something similar yet different? Rhitobrata Bhattacharya’s Sondhe Namar Agey is very much a detective film but certainly has elements of surprise interwoven, making it quite different from the others.

The basic plot of the story revolves around a writer being hanged to death for killing his model-actress wife. After many years their only daughter Roosha comes back to the city and reopens the case. She asks detective Protyushalok to investigate the case. What follows next is a whole chain of events and the unfolding of many unknown facts which ultimately help in finding the killer and proving the innocence of Roosha’s father. Who is the killer? The film answers it beautifully.

Rhitobrata Bhattacharya’s treatment of the genre of detective fiction for this new Bengali film deserves praise. However the pace of the film could have been increased. The film also lacks sleekness at times which is so very important in films of this kind. However, the director must be applauded for paying heed to Rahul Bose’s advice and making the journey of the detective unpredictable. This unpredictability of the character of Protyushalok is one of the attractive features of this detective film. The ending of the film is however interesting. When compared with his earlier film Basanta Utsav, director Rhitobrata shows a marked improvement in the overall presentation of his New Bengali Movie.

Apart from the unpredictability of the detective’s working style, the acting in this film especially by Rahul Bose has helped a lot. The man does not speak in the entire film. But he speaks a thousand words with his eyes. He excels in the role as Protyushalok. The using of the tablet for communication was a master stroke. Actress Nusrat Jahaan, whom the audience primarily associates with no-brainier entertainers that are made only to woo a certain section of the audience, is a revelation in this movie. Her restrained acting as Roosha comes as a pleasant surprise for the audience. Arijit Dutta as the writer does a good job and Rituparna Sengupta plays her part quite convincingly. Palash Sen is commendable as the fashion photographer. The fact that he can act so well is a revelation for the viewers too. Biswajit Chatterjee who is seen onscreen after a long time does justice to his role as the advocate.

Music by Debanjan Banerjee is good but it could have been better. The background score also required precision to help in carrying forward the suspense element. But sadly it does not quite reach up to that level.

Sondhe Namar Agey must be watched simply for the fact that this is a well made film with an interesting detective at the helm of affairs. You will simply not be disappointed. Moreover this Narsingha Films presentation is not merely a detective story but is that of a detective so you have all the reasons to go and check out for yourselves and establish whether the Bengali film content is really evolving or has still not been able to surpass a certain class of storytellers.

Upcoming Bengali Film Sondhey Namar Agey Story to Present a New Take on Detectives of Today

Bengali Film Sondhey Namar Agey Press Conference

After making his debut with Bengali film Basanta Utsab, director Rhitobrata Bhattacharya is all set to treat the audience with his most awaited Bengali film Sondhey Namar Agey. The press conference of this film took place recently in the presence of Rahul Bose, Nusrat Jahaan and director Rhitobrata Bhattacharya at the Park Hotels.

Sondhey Namar Agey is based on a murder mystery revolving around a city based celebrity family. An eminent writer accused in the murder of his wife, (former Miss Kolkata and actress) is sentenced to death. After many years the case is reopened by their daughter and with the help of detective Protyushalok Bhattacharya, she tries to prove the innocence of her father.

“Sondhey Namar Agey is not a detective story. It can rather be called as a detective’s story. From my perspective it is extremely difficult to find a detective like Protyushalok. He has grey shades and is not the typical endearing detective like Feluda or Byomkesh”.

“The genre of the detective films is too predictable. Hence I asked Rhitobrata that the journey of the detective will be unpredictable as this will give a twist to the predictable story. He will also be not the typical detective that one can think of. He is not analytical or articulate. There is a heaviness and darkness to this character. He is also an IPS officer who is well trained which again is a big difference from the conventional Bengali sleuths. He is also prone to drinking” said Rahul Bose.

Rhitobrata also added that there are events which we cannot protest against. However the detective in the film protests against these injustices and takes a strong stand against them.

Nusrat said on the occasion “I play an urban character, Roosha who is Sholoana Bangali at heart. I have worked hard to portray this strong, confident and urban character. I am not like Roosha in the day to day life. I believe there is Roosha in every girl. However the stand she takes and the way she takes decision in every matter is what I also must do in my personal life”.

Rahul Bose when asked whether he will be directing a film in future joked that he will start directing when he grows old or when he feels that his talent is no longer working. However the actor added that he is writing the screenplay with many characters who speak a variety of languages like Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Konkani, Gujrati and so on. “You never know I may be credited with making the first film in India on thirty three languages” said the actor with a smile.

The film has a stellar cast of Rahul Bose, Rituparna Sengupta, Nusrat Jahaan, June Maliah, Arijit Dutta, Priya Karfa, Dr. Palash Sen, Rhitobrata Bhattacharya, Biswajit Chatterjee and others. The music is by Debanjan Banerjee and the Director of Photography is Soumik Haldar.

The film releases on 28th of November in theatres all over West Bengal and we wish the team the Very Best in their efforts!
